Dilu,

I'm bursting to create a Golly.   I've been thinking about it for a while now.   I've searched the web, but can't seem to find any patterns.....   where do you suggest I start??    bear_ermm  I think Gollies and bears go together like peaches and cream and would love to try....

I would be grateful for any suggestions,

many thanks, as always  bear_happy

I was just online trying to find a pattern as well, great minds think alike! I want to make a teeny one!

Hmmmm

OK here's my experience-  When I first started I wasn't thrilled with the one pattern I found.....I mean no disrespect, but it didn't do it for me, as a pattern, but the golly was quite cute.

Sooooo I started doing my own patterns.  I figured if I could draw out patterns for me surely I could do a golly.

I have a scan program that lets me increase or decrease sizes easily so changing sizes is not a problem.

Do you do your own bear patterns?  I mean do you draw them out-create the patterns?  Because if you do you should be able to extrapolate from that the sizing- then you start sketching-  Because if you do your own bear patterns  the process is the same-the difference would be the head/neck and shaping....

Does this help at all?

It never occurred to me - do you think there's a market out there for patterns?

Mine are so totaly different than the others I have seen.

And the gollys I see on e-bay, welll......they tend to run to the early Americana type look

There are a couple of things to think about:

Do you want a nose
Do you want a big round head or would you want a simpler head
Do you want to articulate
You would have to keep these things in mind while you do the design process

Do want a pattern- e-mail me if you think you would want a copy of a pattern of one of mine, and we can talk about it

Also what are you planning on using for hair?  I use mohair- but there are many other options and that might impact your design decisions

Go to Jane's site and Laure's site and look at their gollies, because they
do totally different gollies too.  They may give you different ideas.  On what you want yours to look like

When I got a Stieff Golly for Christmas I had to have noses after that...

I'm not sure I answered your questions...let me know if you need more info

 I am glad you are interested in the little guys, they really are a lot of fun

I do my own bear patterns but wouldnt know where to start with a golly... my aunt use to make bunnies out of muslin and she tied them at their elbows and knees so they could be posed... I think I would do that -and I think I would do a more  rag doll type if that makes sense LOL I would like to do a tiny one to go with a bear or something... I dont think I would do a nose that is 3D

You could also make a knitted one...I have a dozen knitted Golly patterns I would share.

I think we need to take Dilu's Golly class.  I know I am signing up. bear_laugh bear_thumb

I can crochet but my "tension" seems to be a bit off so that when I do a scarf it kind of gets wavy LOL   Thank you Dilu, you are so swee to me

Whooo Hoooo  Judi's taking the class!

Yipppeeeeee !          Yikes!

Actually I have been playing around the past week with a brand spanking new way of doing things, and I am excited to see how it works.

I wanted a bigger surface area butt so that they could sit on the piano with bent legs and not fall over- ( it'll have glass in it)

I named the new pattern Tillberg  Tilly for a girl and Berg....

I sewed up my latest version this early am and now need to joint and stuff.

So what am I doing here.....dawdding  :D

Hi again Dilu,

I'm with Kim, I haven't got the foggiest idea about where to start a goolie!!  bear_rolleyes   Sorry!!

Do you joint them??  I picture them not jointed, which is a whole new concept!!   Kim's knotting idea sounds great.   I wouldn't even know how to start a face, I need to sit down and think about it...... it WILL come to me, I'm a very determined person and if I want to do something I do eventually, not much beats me!!

I hope you don't mind the odd question along the way.....sorry to be a pain!!!

I have made a few Golly's but just drew the pattern out on paper. They sold well but then I just had to go back to bears. I did, however, pick up a great book called.."Classic Gollies to knit ,SEw & Crochet" by Marjory Fainges..It has lots of Gollies of all sizes plus Golly things..such as a teacosy, slipper faces etc.

I joint the gollies down to the 3" size.....they joint just like a ted.

I use the same things- I used to string joint the little ones but then I broke down and got the tiny cotter pins and discs-  Jointing them is not problem-you joint your bears.

Yeah you could have the little wollikins unjointed, but I am here to tell you they don't like that much.....they like to dance around and get into mischief....and since I started giving them opposable thumbs and articulating them they have gone crazy around here.....

Clare, my darlin, I doubt you'll come up with odder questions than I thought up myself along the way....ask away and we can all learn something new!

Di said about her gollies

they like to dance around and get into mischief.

Boy how true this is! I had labeled three gollies ready to sell and when I got up this morning all three were sat on the floor in the corner by the cabinet were I left them...X-Files here...the door was closed to the cabinet...Freaky!
