At the end of the year 2007 Sebastian Green plans to set out on his round Britain walk – a distance in excess of 5,000 miles. Seb will be just 18 years old.
Seb’s reasons for doing this are complex, but stem from an incident in 2005 when, in the early hours of a Sunday morning, he and a friend decided to ‘borrow’ a boat from Weymouth Marina and take it on a trip around the harbour and into the Fleet Lagoon. Several hours later, cold and wet, they ran aground and after failing to raise the alarm by conventional means, they decided to cut and run. Seb leapt over the side of the boat to wade ashore and within 3 steps found himself sinking up to his waist in mud.
To cut a long story short Seb was eventually rescued by India Juliet, the Coastguard helicopter based at Lee-on-Solent, taken to hospital and subsequently arrested by the police for ‘taking a conveyance without permission’.
It was a turning point for Seb. Given into the care of the Youth Offending Team he was offered the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and over the summer of 2006 he successfully completed a Silver Expedition on Exmoor. He is now well on his way to completing the full Award. He loves to walk, and his long held ambition to walk around the coast of Britain, with just his dog for company, has now become a possibility.
Seb is very aware that his escapade last summer could have been his last, and the recent deaths of 3 other boys from Dorset has hit him hard. He is determined to not only ‘right his wrong’ by repaying some of the money his helicopter rescue cost by raising money for the Air Ambulance, but to use his walk to promote Sea Safety and raise awareness amongst teenagers that the power of the sea should never be underestimated. Seb has also chosen Starlight to benefit from his walk to help brighten the live of seriously and terminally ill children.
