I'm sure no TTer ever expected this subjject to be posed, but I've puzzled my brains out about it.

To set it up, I rec'd my "Cosmetologist" lic (beautician) in 1960. I'm so far away from any one with any knowledge like this - and I've searched everywhere online. As I'm doing similar research for the way sheep hair grows and I know about the 3 stages of human hair, (growth, resting, shedding) and online I've seen more on mice hair growing than I ever want to surf through again. (Poor lab mice - about the only test subjects it seems like)

OK OK I'm getting to it... After 3 winters of surgeries, my hair has changed; they say anesthesia & other drugs/trauma will do that. I KNOW that I'm losing more than my 100 average hairs a day.

But at least once a week I find a double one. And of the 4 I've taped up in the past month, 2 of them are both white (gray) and the other 2 have one brown and one white!!

I know that it can happen that 2 hairs can grow from the same follicle at the same time, but they've never been described as coming out of the same root bulb!  Like Siamese twins.
Here is yesterday's, stuck to a Post-it©:

DblHair.jpg

(Sorry for the other dust bits on the glued edge - I immediately dropped it on the floor after spreading the 2 hairs apart)
They all average 4" - 5" before shedding. My microscope is packed away or I'd examine it more thoroughly.
They're not stuck together for the first inch; they're totally separate hairs.
They just look together cuz it's just the way the winter static electricity grabbed them onto the sticky side.

There must be many hairdressers and in-school students reading TT. Can anyone explain this?
It's such a small thing but happening with such regularity that getting an answer is driving me CRAZY!
Y'all don't want me 'wigging out' now, do you?

Help?

Wow, Bobbie, that is just so weird!!! I've never heard of anything like this and I'm not a hairdresser so have no idea but I can't wait to hear what it's all about!

If you saw my reply about Chrissi's Featherweight: I figure there's a Yin & Yang in everything.

I, who want one of every tool, is now getting my wish - but in a different guise and two at a time!!

Pili bigemini.  The theory that it is happening due to drugs/trauma is probably an accurate one.

Just call me a whiz at obscure Googling  bear_original

Bobbie I haven't heard or seen this before I do know that medication can change the hair. After nearly a year on medication my hair has changed so much, I am losing more hair than I was and have alot more grey.

Didn't learn that in cosmetology school.... didn't learn much there to be honest.... it was rather a joke! But that's irrelavant here. I do recall learning about illness and medication effecting hair condition and growth but no double hairs.

Kelly is a good "looker upper" and I'd say your original diagnosis is acurate too and you simply have developmentally challenged roots as a result!

Please don't wig out on us!

it could be proteins too a certain protein with a cerain type of medication can cause a double or even triple growth but no worries it is just a genetic thing it ill pass the best thing to do is just take it easy.

I have actually seen this before...but mainly in beards and body hair after waxing. It have seen it when the hair regrows it is joined at the bulb and produces two types of hair one with pigment and one without, sometimes both the same..and sometimes different textures. This may be because when the hair is ripped out ,the follicle becomes in some way damaged and it produces a weird hair like this. In this case  it might be due to medication...that the follicle has been damaged by it. Perhaps the hair growth is going into overdrive and producing more hair than normal...that one of those hairs is actually older than the other..so the follicle is growing another hair before the first one is ready to drop out during the growth cycle. It just so happens that the new hair is growing with no pigment as your hair is getting whiter, as part of the ageing process. But because the older hair is falling out due to the natural cycle it's pulling the other one out too at the same time. Hormones do funny things..anyway..at least you have some hair!!!!!

Whoa! You are right I never expected that on TT! I am fascinated by the way changes we make in our diet ( including medicines) affect our bodies in so many more ways than we could know!

And the word for today is "Pili bigemini''.   bear_original

I've seen this very very rarely with my own hair when I was a teen, but didn't bother to look it up.  Figured it was down to me being a wierd teen  bear_whistle   Now I've got a term for it!

I'd say don't worry too much.  If you're eager keen to try to alter the pattern, you might try one of those copper head tinglers http://fayejohnston.com/head_tinglers.htm   It should increase the bloodflow to your head, and the follicle roots, and might help to stabilize the growth.  I've never tried one, but it looks like bliss!

And you can also try detoxing your body a bit if you think it might be leftovers from the past three surgeries.  There's footsie detoxers http://www.baar.com/Merchant2/merchant. … t_Count=21   bear_flower

KELLY! MY SAVIOUR!!!  Thk goodness I'm not going crazy...
Pili bigeminy - who'da thunk it?? And for 2 weeks I've been Googling every combination of 2 hairs & follicles that I could think of....you're a genius!

Knowing that head hair grows an average of 1/2" a month, these double hairs are almost a year old, (I began surgeries in Dec 05) which means I can expect these to go on for at least another year.

And I LOVE the Happy Head Tingler! About 4 years ago I was visiting AZ (babysitting) for my then preteen GDaus and we were in a chi-chi chic dept. store in Scottsdale. We passed the counter with them displayed and tried them on each other - it was heaven! But then (my guilty secret) the lower back of my head is a place to touch and I'll do your bidding!

I'd tried those in-shoe magnets against the soles of your feet, copper arm bracelets, etc.
DH is a retired electrician (we've got a LOT of scrap copper here - called 'rabbit/rabbet/rabbat' and worth a lot at the metal scrap recycling yards) and I do understand about our aura/the electrical field surrounding each of us.
But those treatments never affected me for good or bad, just my wallet; the fact that these little flexible probes were gently sliding over feel-good areas is what felt so pleasant.

But I've got 10 digits at the ends of my 2 arms and 3 back-scratchers; if I wasn't so cheap I'd get a Happy Head Tingler!!

And I saw the footsie ads for the first time this week: pardon my chuckles but I don't find them very convincing. On one particular model, as the pad came off the foot, it definitely looked like the rest of the foot was a bit darker, as in - the foot was cleaner where the pad had been. I'm not sure I buy into the whole detox methods, at least the way that retailers would wish us to spend $$.

Bobbie: Now you have introduced a pickle of a puzzle here haven't you?....I am intrigued!! I think it has something to do with DNA and the Siamese twin’s theory you have. That would be my guess...

bear_grin   I'm cheap too.... that's why I often do the head massage with my own fingers, but thought I'd show you the head tingler thing in case you wanted a 'doo dad'.   bear_original

I've not had a chance to try one of the detox patches myself, but I've been eyeballing them for awhile.  I wonder if they'd really do the trick....must get my big brother to guinea pig for me  bear_whistle  bear_laugh

Well Bobbie, I think you win the award for the most unusual OT topic of the month.

Re:  Surgeries, it takes at the minimum one year for your body to completely return to normal.....and if i understand your original post you have had surgery the last three winters?  Poor baby, I am sorry....

But you did liven up our day!  bear_grin

and Kelly?  Best sleuth on Google, bijemini
