How to you know what size doll eyes to use for a bear? They tell you what size the pupil is, but what is the size of the whole eye?  Does this make since????? bear_ermm

Hi Lynn, not sure which eyes you are looking at but most ( I would have said all but seems you found some that arent hehe) doll eyes are sized for the whole eye not the pupil  . I am guessing that you would need a much larger eye than a bear eye as the size factors in a large amount of white.

Hi Lynn.
I keep a stash of many sizes as I never know what size to use until the bears head is sewn and stuffed. There is no right or wrong size...it's really a matter of what look you want.  A younger cutsie-faced bear may have larger eyes whereas  older-looking bears may have the smaller eyes.
The most important measurement will be the pupil size.  That really determines the bears eye size. If you would normally use a 14mm German glass bear eye then you woudl want to get the same pupil measurement in the oval glass doll eye.  Make sure when you order them that you are reading the correct measurement.  Some doll eyes are sold by the entire length.  If you're not sure then I would ask the seller.

Most of the sclera (whites) will be hidden in the head.  You can either cover all the sclera or have some of it showing....which is they way I like to use them.

The best thing you can do really, is experiment with a few different sizes and see what you like for any particular bear.

Global Doll eyes have really nice oval heavy weight glass eyes with beautiful details.

You can also use taxidermy glass bear eyes. The come with a very small ring of sclera and are  fantastic.  I use these  a lot.  Van Dykes Taxidermy Supply carry theses.  Here's their site:  vandykestaxidermy.com bear_thumb  bear_thumb  bear_thumb

Hi Judi
We now need to know how you attach the eyes since they do not have wire loops
Thanks for your help

OOPS..CORRECTION... in my previous post I stated that you need to know the pupil size when actually I meant the IRIS size.

Gail,
As far as attaching.  There are a few ways.  You an use a super strong expoxie after presculpting eye sockets.  You only want to use this if after they are attached you are creating a layer over the glass eye..like eyelids, brow bones...etc

OR, you can attach a wire loop with Axopie Sculpt.  You'll want to file the back side first with a metal file to rough up the surface.  This will increase the bond strength. bear_thumb
