I am reading this laughing as I went thru all of this last week!! Our old computer was on it's last legs, barely running. One day i smelt smoke and shut that monster down.  My husband an electronics whiz, Notice I did not say computer whiz. realized that it was the fan on the computer that had burnt up, He fixed it but said couldn't guarantee how long that old computer was going to work. It is probably 8 years old. It was top of the line when I bought it and cost a fortune.
I decided to get a new lap top, I love it now after about a week. But that first week agghhh! I couldn't get my dsl to work, I broke down and used the wireless  network that my daughter left here while she is at College works great just couldn't remember the password  bear_tongue  The vista is definetly different but this computer is soooo much faster.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someone might know where I'm going wrong here.  My old computer was working at a snail's pace and was completely outdated in terms of speed and capacity, so I purchased a new system and it arrived yesterday.  Suffice it to say, my son and I set it up in about half an hour and I then spent the next four hours trying to install my AOL broadband.  This morning I'm back on the old computer and almost tearing my hair out in frustration!

Hi Paula,

I just got a new computer (my husband's toy) that they told me was top line.  I've had AOL service for a long time with many problems but the new Vista on the new computer just won't work with AOL service.  Since AOL has done nothing but given me headaches for years I just got rid of it and went to my cable company for service.  My goodness, it seems to be 10 times as fast, I love it.  Maybe you can find someone else to give you internet besides AOL.

Love your bears,

Hazel

Well, it's good to hear I'm not the only one who has suffered with computer's of late!  bear_tongue

Hazel, with a little bit of research on the AOL website, I managed to find out what I needed to do ... there's an AOL 9 V.R programme which has to be downloaded ... the VR means 'Vista ready' ... once I'd downloaded it, everything started working smoothly!  The only thing I haven't yet worked out is how to transfer my personal filing cabinet back into the programme, but I'll get there.

After a nightmarish start, I'm actually about 90% happy with my new computer now ... if it only came with the Microsoft Office programme installed I'd raise that to 100%!  I love the graphics and the speed at which the computer works is a dream come true!  I'm still finding my way around the layout, but it seems fairly much commonsense.  There are a few bits 'n pieces I don't understand yet, but I daresay I'll make more sense of them when I actually find I need them.
