Well, our grandson is sick AGAIN - they are now waiting for a referal to an ear, nose & throat specialist.  Last night my daughter called at 11:00 p.m, in tears, because she could not get Corson to stop coughing, and she is exhausted from being sick and working 60 hours a week in retail, gearing up to the Xmas rush, AND had to work the following morning.  I decided to go over and stay the night in his room, allowing her to get some sleep.  We bought a new, cold mist humidifier for his room, but she couldn't give him any more medication, when she suddenly said that in the past week,  three people had told her to rub Vicks vaporub on the bottom of Corson's feet and then put socks on him, and it would stop him from coughing.  We kind of looked at each other and said, why not give it a try, so we did it.  We put him back to bed and he went to sleep right away and he did not cough ONCE for almost 4 hours!  He coughed a little bit after that, but we didn't know the method is good for about 4 hours and you are supposed to repeat it.  Anyway, he slept 11 1/2 hours!

I did some research online, to see if anyone knew why it worked and apparently the feet and hands are supposed to be connected to organs in the body.  If you rub garlic on the bottom of your feet, within 20 minutes you will be able to taste it.  The area under the toes is connected to the bronchial areas.  I also found an article that said some Canadian doctors found it as effective as giving cough syrup, without the dangerous effects of some of the cough syrup ingredients.  Who knew!  Anyway, for those young mums with kids that have bad coughs, it's definitely worth trying!  It's supposed to also work with Euclyptus, Peppermint Oil etc and it's good for adults as well as kids.

Hope Corson is feeling better! Nothing feels as helpless as when you child is sick and you can't seem to comfort him.
Thank you for the tip. I could have used that the week before and after the Schaumburg Teddy Bear show. I had the worst cold I've had in years and coughed all night.

Tami,
Hubby and I have both had bronchial pneumonia in the past month, and have coughed as never berfore - we could have used it too LOL!  Somehow we usually get this information AFTER the fact, but this time it was amazingly useful.

Brenda,
Sounds like the virus bug is knocking us all off our feet. I am now starting my 2nd week of spluttering, and coughing and crawling around the house.
Rubbing vicks under the sole of feet is something we have always done here in SA, especially when one goes to bed in the evenings.

Hope you , hubby, daughter and grandson are all soon on the road of recovery.

Lynette,
We are obviously behind the times in North America, but boy, we catch on fast, if it works!

I hope you don't have the same bug we all had - it took a month for me to get over it and hubby is still coughing some.

                                   hugs,

                                   Brenda

First of all, I really hope the specialist can help Corson.  There's nothing worse than a sick child.

Secondly, thanks so much for the tip on Vicks Vapor Rub.  I am definitely going to file that one away in the ol' gray matter!

I discovered this remedy myself a few years ago when I had bronchitis.  I had a cough that occurred mostly at night so I was getting no sleep.  I had read about putting the salve on the feet earlier, thinking "how will that work, it's not my feet that are coughing?".  When I became desperate, I tried it.  I was absolutely amazed.  The salve I used is called Unkers.  It is very similar to vicks, but I have better results with it.

The Garlic thing is to od with the level of the skins absorption: it happens pretty much anywhere, but i guess it's less easy for a child to ingest anything you put on their feet!  Aromatherapists use the garlic thing as an example to show haw essential oils taken in through the skin can do so much for our inner health, even though you're not actually ingesting the oils :)

As a relatively new veggie, I can tell you I find the whole 'garlic thing' MUCH stronger now I don't eat meat: I have to wash my hands like crazy after chopping onions1

Millie,
My parents were British and they always used Camphorated Oil to rub on the chest when we had coughs.  From what I read, it should work like the Vicks as well.  I'm going to try it the next time I have a cough.  Such a simple trick!

This falls under the heading:  Learn something new everyday.  What a great trick!!  I'll have to file it away in my memory for later use.  I'm rarely ever sick since moving to the lower 48.  In Alaska, I was sick every winter and every spring with bronchitis.  I've only been really ill once in all the 23 years living stateside.  Knock wood, it stays that way!!

Warmest get well hugs,

Isn't that an amazing piece of advice.  And brilliant to hear that it helped.  Shall certainly try it next time one of my family are in discomfit.  Thanks so much for telling us about it.  It is just awful when our baby cubs are unwell - you would try anything to give them relief.

So glad for you all that it worked
I had a neighbor that was from Mexico, I recall her doing the same thing for her grandson that was sick all the time with his asthma. She told me how it really worked well for him. Sounds like a old wise tale that actually works!!

I mentioned this remedy to a co-worker and she had her husband try it = and it worked! He didn't cough until 4 AM, after about 6 hours.
My husband has been suffering lately with leg cramps at night. My mother years ago told him to put a bar of Ivory soap in the bed and it would help and it mostly did but last night I had him also rub the bottom of his feet with the soap before bedtime and he was cramp free.  Go figure!

Marian,
Well, I hadn't heard that about Ivory soap, but I'll file it away with the Vick one.  Isn't it amazing what simple solutions there are to such misery.  With all the interest these days into herbs and remedies, I'm beginning to think we should have paid MUCH more attention to our grandparents remedies  bear_grin   All the time and money invested in coming up with new drugs and the old stuff seems to work pretty well bear_thumb   Thanks for that tip!

I remember a couple of other handy 'remedies'. Garlic for mosquitoes - they don't like the taste of garlic in your blood aparently. Unfortuntely people don't like it on your breath so you can use garlic capsules that are sold with parsley added.

AS well, my son years ago used to suffer terribly from cold sores. The doctor was ready to prescribe cortisone but instead I got active yoghurt capsules and sprinkled some on the sores. They promptly dried up and went away. From then on, whenever he started to get a sore I started dosing him with yoghurt capsules.

my mom also told me about onions being a venom absorber i got stung by a huge skull hornet she made a poultice of crushed raw onion and potatoe and it absorbed the venom out then she used baking soda and shortening to nullify any acid left from the sting also the onion helped me with a black widow bit and saved me from being sick.
