Back Road BearsSo I'm curious... when your hubby/boyfriend/significant other is away over night and you get the house to yourself.... what is your FAVORITE thing to do???
I don't have to cook and can finally order out a pizza... hubby doesn't like pizza!
And I can watch a chic flick w/o comments from the peanut gallery!
And I can use my sewing machine at 1am without fear of waking him up!!! (I'm a night owl and love to work then!)
The dogs love getting to stay on the bed all night and not having to be crated.
Yeah, we party when he's gone! 
Kinda pathetic if that's my idea of a party, I know!
So, what do you look forward to when the cat is away???

I love being alone! I haven't had a day to myself since before we left for Disneyworld, April 11th and I'm about ready to explode. Our son came home to go back to school and he doesn't move into his new apartment until June 4th and then I get three lousy days and hubby is on holidays again! Couple that with babysitting a hyperactive 4 year old at least two days a week, and I'm all but done it. Just having someone else in the house makes me antsy. I breath a huge sigh of relief when hubby goes to bed and I can finally relax.
I'm dreaming of June 16th, when hubby is back at work and I will have the house to myself, at least during the day. I could have been a hermit. I love to browse on the computer and work on my bears/art until 3 -4:00 a.m. I think the biggest plus for me is not having to make regular meals when hubby is away. Unfortunately it doesn't happen often - I loathe cooking and my goal is to get it cooked, on the table, and cleaned up as fast as possible, so I can get back to creating. I can survive on cereal and poached eggs forever, along with President's Choice frozen meals. Hubby has to have a proper meal EVERY night!!! When he finally does retire, he better be prepared to wear the chef's hat, because that's when I will retire from cooking.

Creative Design Studio (RKR4CDS)However did you know??? Since I first heard about the French cave experiments in the 70s on learning one's natural Circadian Rhythm, I've wanted to do this. I almost got to it 20 years ago but other things crept in.
They had no external light for time clues, no clocks, radio, Tv/etc.. just sleeping when sleepy, eating when hungry, working when the mood moves you...
Now DH has been Playing Farmer since Tuesday and I am absolutely learning my own natural cycle: it's as I always suspected: I'd do better on a 28 - 30 hour day.
And I've seen 3 matinee movies, gotten writing done, will finish a comp set tonight & tomorrow, feel very rested. etc....
As I went from my parents home to my married home to our first child 10 months later, I never had the college/apartment/depending upon only yourself situation. I've always wanted to try being completely independent on myself, even if for only a week.
I'm LOVIN" it!!
And don't call if you know my number. The machine takes all calls when I'm here & Don's outside (he can't stand a ringing phone...) so you know that I'm not even looking to see if there are calls this week.
Of course, Of course, I'm lucky to have a DH and be married for 44 years next week, but doggone it - I love it when my Life and House are quiet and simple.
Brenda - just read your whole post: I'm fortunate that he's VERY interested in cooking (I'll gladly do dishes then!). Even had to give him his own cookbook space. Alton Brown (Food Network) and the writing & recipes in Cook's Illustrated are favorites w/both of us. Love knowing the whys & wherefores.
But I think I have gone quietly mad this winter. It's my third one of surgery and I can't get out & about as I did before. It's a very small house and we're rarely out-of-sight of each other. It's SO disruptive after 40 years of being alone (well, 3 kids but they don't count as DH's do on the Interrupting Scale)
It's been a Veeeeerrrryyyy Looooooooooooooooooooooooong winter.... He still isn't outdoors much because there isn't much to do until one can start gardening. It's got to get out of the 50s for that to happen. I'm stoic but don't now how much longer I can hang in there!!!!!

"Alone" is what I have to have, if I am going to remain sane! I am sooooo miserable and cranky after 5 weeks of no alone time. Even hubby is tip toeing around me. It's not a "want", it's a requirement for my state of mind LOL! I dodge neighbours, phone calls, etc to get my alone time. I could live with just the computer for my companion because I'm in control of whether I am in the mood to be social or not. Apparently, my great-grandfather moved out back to a garden shed to be by himself, in his old age, and I'm starting to look for mine :crackup:

He has had a gas heater in the garage for years, was always going to make a workshop out there.
I'm threatening to call in carpenters to get this project going if it would help!
I don't want to have to go away for peace & Quiet - I want to know that I can depend on certain, regular periods of everyone ELSE going away and leaving ME alone in my own space.

Back Road BearsBrenda - I'm with you on the whole cooking bit.... LOVE cereal, but like your DH, mine has to have a "proper meal" every night too. WHY??????????
I guess I kind of have the best of both worlds... hubs is gone 12-13 hours a day for work & commute and I'm home all day alone. Still I sometimes grumble when he finally gets home at night and I have to stop everything, have my quiet interrupted and COOK!
But then there's the dogs... they are soooo high maintenance... I'd almost rather have hubs around!
Last year hubs was out of work for 9 months... I got a taste of what it'll be like when he retires. I think I'll go out and get a job when that happens!!! :crackup:
Home Depot (do you have those in Canada, Brenda?) has some wonderful "sheds" that I've had my eye on for a studio... plunk it out in the back in the woods, run electricity to it, rodent proof it and I'll be all set!
Posts: 8,574Well, when mom-in-law died 6 months ago I got her house-which is tiny for a house, 600 sq feet, but big enough for a studio.
We both agree this has been a much more pleasant winter; I go a mere 60 feet out the front door to the SewsZone....and while i can't order out pizza because there is no one to make or deliver- I do keep all the goodies he can't have over there now....but lets be real; who really eats chocolate when playing with mohair or quilting fabric?
I think the best thing, besides not being cooped up all winter in the rain, is not having to pick up and put everything away when you aren't done with a project....If I stop half way through cutting out something the only thing I do is close the rotory cutter....It really makes a difference.
And unlike some of our friends here, who are so very organized, I am anything but organized during the heat of a project...
The second best thing is knowing where everything is--no one has borrowed the pliers and then but them where he thinks it is more logical...knowing where every single thing is is a huge time saver-not to mention frustration eliminator.
And being a hermit is vastly underrated-I love it!
So here's to you ladies, hoping all the cats stay away several times this summer so you can play to your hearts content-just be sure to call your play work when you talk to said cats, can't have them suspicious you are having too much fun !

:crackup: :crackup: :crackup: Just had that exact phone conversation..... only I'm going to have to actually have some bears finished to back up what I said I was doing when he gets home! 
When my cat leaves I head for the slots as I love those machines. He thinks anyone who goes to the slots is a loser so he never knows when I go ( not very often maybe once every 3 mos. ). I also love it that I don't have to cook and my time is all mine to do whatever I want. Having said that I would still not want to be without him He by the way is a useless tit in the kitchen!!!!

Hmmm . . . when the hubster is away, I stay up late, wait a minute, I always stay up late. I isolate myself (as he puts it) in my "room", wait a minute, I always do that. I spend too much time at the computer, wait a minute, I always do that. I drive to town by myself to go shopping, wait a minute, I always do that. I don't cook dinner (yep, I love cereal too). I do let the dogs sleep on the bed with me and I go to bed with the tv on, I don't do those things when he's home. I guess I don't do much different when he's gone because I'm pretty much always doing what I want to be doing anyway. Ew, I'm sounding a bit selfish.
I too appreciate my alone time. After we moved to the mountains I was home alone all week for 3 years before the hubster retired. He commuted to the SF bay area during the week and came home only on weekends. You know what sailor's wives say, "Underway or underfoot". That's kind of how I felt when he retired. I had to make some adjustments but he had his fishing and golfing. Now his back has "gone bad" and no more golfing. Eeeek, I'm hoping he finds another hobby quick. I bought him a fly tying kit. We'll see.
FenBeary FolkA couple of years ago, hubby passed his lorry test and the firm he worked for started sending him on over-nighters. I can honestly say it was worse............................get home, wash up, call hubby (1hr for day-chat), cook, eat, call hubby (1hr for bed-time chat), go to bed. I had less time than I do now, which was really bad as I have no time now.
When he changed jobs and started to get home earlier than me, it was a nightmare for about 3 months, but no washing up, it took about 2 months for him to decide on a dish washer :crackup:
I have just taxed hubbies 1000cc honda bike for the summer, so he will often head off out and visit his buddies, other than that as long as I am with in sight its ok 
Does complain that I love the computor more than him though, not sure where he gets that idea from
DoodlebearsI get alone time EVERY DAY...yup! I get up really early and it's so peaceful, only my two dogs for company and they just lay down and go back to sleep. I sit at my computer, make birthday cards etc. and visit TT to see what you have all been up to whilst I was sleeping. The morning starts late for my husband as he goes to bed much later than I do so peace and quiet is something I do get to enjoy. He retired very early from work after having bowel cancer and is not able to work owing to health problems, so he is home 24-7 but I'm used to that. We really don't get under each other's feet. Thank heaven for having three reception rooms. As for meals, we now share the cooking. My daughter Sarah cooked for all of the family for a long time owing to my disability, but now she is at uni hubs and I do OK. I do treasure the times when I get the house to myself though, I can watch exactly what I want on TV without bothering anyone, whilst I sew to my heart's content....bliss!

YEP! I do have a few days alone since I work outside the home only part time and the kids are in school, but I work much better in the evenings, so by the time dinner, baths and homework are finished, I'm just starting, and I end up staying up way too late!

MerBear OriginalsA night alone......the remote control all to myself!!! I like to watch tv while I hand-sew and my husband drives me crazy switching back and forth all evening. The few nights he's away - I schedule my shows for the evening and leave the darn thing alone. I swear he figures they change the schedule each commercial cause he goes through the whole process each time.
Not having to cook a meal is also nice - I'm quite happy with a grilled cheese sandwich for supper. A couple of years ago he went away for a month - I swear I lost 10 lbs!

Ruby Mountain BearsPerfect Example was this week my husband had to go out of town to see Doctors, (we call him Humpty dumpty) He see's annually to Drs who put him back together. Since they are the ones who know what happened to him it is just easier to stick to them. So he would be gone for two whole days , I had those days off work, You'd think that would be great, timing is everything. My Older daughter came home from college the same day he left and then I had two teenagers one who thinks the world revolves around her,,, Oh wait all teenager think that. The second day had to work at the ranch half day(that is my other job) then take world revolver to town to get new phone she broke hers and the world will stop if she doesn't have her phone. Then trip to the Wally mart to get her some new work pants and boots to work the ranch with me. so Friday back to work at the Dr. Office ( that is a break) I actually get to sit down. Today I will make a trip to the nursery and buy flowers and plant out front. At least that will be fun!!

I had our 3rd baby in 3.25 years and my cat did cooked and did dishes for three weeks or so afterwards.
He was silly enough to ask "How long do you stay in the kitchen?" and of course w/3 kids I said "Hours every day."
I had my first dishwasher the next week....

It is fun... I was afraid some might not want to share.... but I figured we'd have similar stories to tell.... most 'cats' ARE created equal after all and most of us DO cherish our alone time, regardless of how frequent or infrequent.

My worst time was when my cat turned 40 - he hurt his back and was off work for 14 months! Two different doctors told him he would never work again and I was having panic attacks - really!
Finally, a set of odd, coincidental circumstances landed us at the Canadian Back Institute with all expenses paid. A little Kinesiologist figured out what was wrong, after two Orthopedic specialists had missed the problem. He spent the week days in Ottawa working out at the CBI and came home on weekends and the Kinesiologist had him back to work part time in 6 weeks! I was soooo relieved! We were broke after his year off, but we made it and he's been fine ever since. I buy him a golf membership every summer, to keep him fit (and out of the house) :crackup: !
Oh and we do have Home Depots here and I often look longingly at the sheds and wonder how hard it would be to fit them with heat and electricity :crackup: Some of them are really cute!
