For artists and collectors sponsored by Intercal...your mohair supplier and Johnna's Mohair Store
I ordered 2 shades of wool felt from Intercal early this week - they arrived yesterday (very quick delivery, THX!) and I was shocked at the 'feel' of them. They're so smooth and silky! I thought I was holding the extra-light Ultrasuede™!
I'm participating in a fiber project at the Midwest Fiber & Folk Art Fest in late July (Crystal Lake IL). One of the displays will be an artist's rendition of this 1940s Handbag/Purse:
The pattern originally called for J.P.Coats Knit Cro-Sheen but I will be needle felting it and needed a wool base to needle into. I'm sure that my entry is going to be one of the most unusual of the 100 entries!
But most of you all use wool felt and I think after using Ultrasuede™ for minis from 1990 on, I've never had occasion to work with this beautiful fabric!
I use wool felt almost exclusively. Like you, I find the "feel" of it intriguing, and it is so nice to work with. I find ultrasuede comes in so many wonderful colors, but for me, it's too fiddly.

Got to agree, I only use Ultra Suede occasionally, between the two I much prefer the wool felt ... and it takes the airbrush beautifully. At the moment though, I'm going through a nostalgic phase with velvet!
I used wool felt for the first time on my bear William the Cub, the "aged" bear pictured below, made in 2001. I was tickled by how easy it was to work with. In fact, if you'll notice, I used two layers of felt, one red and one tan. I thought that would make it really difficult to sew the paw pads on the machine, but it was a piece of cake. I look forward to using it again...I have so much Ultrasuede in so many colors, but it's always a matter of what matches the fur I'm using. Great stuff, that felt!
What a fun project that purse will be, Bobbie. Hope you'll share pictures. :photo:

I switched exclusively to wool felt a few years ago. I find it much easier to work with than ultrasuede. I don't get the color match that ultrasuede allows but I really like that it's a traditional teddy bear material.

Yup - I agree that wool felt is MUCH easier to work with than ultrasuede, also much easier to shade with Prismacolors.
I used ultrasuede on a few mini's when I first started making bears, but I've never used it on larger bears. I love the look and feel of wool felt too much.

I've been using both ultrasuede and wool felt but do prefer the wool felt. Here is another place to order it: www.vintagevogue.com. They seem to have a great deal more colors and I got a yard of the 100% virgin untreated wool felt and it is wonderful...very thick. Apparently because it is untreated it will dye more easily and it can be felted.

Felt just isn't felt unless it's 100% wool.

I always use woollen felt on my old girls and boys. It takes colour beautifully. Thanks so much Marion for that gorgeous link.
