I searched for dye and dyeing, and found some threads, but didn't see anything about using coffee.  Anyone done this, or read how to do it?  Same as tea?

Thanks Gina!  I'm making a bear for a coffee drinkin' co-worker for Christmas!  Would love for it to smell like fresh ground but can't find coffee scented polyfil!

Deb,
When I read the title of your post I thought, "Hmmm.... was Deb drinking coffee while sewing and have an accident?" But no, that's something I'd do!!!  bear_laugh

Let us know how coffee dying goes!!!

Perhaps you could put a satchet of coffee beans in a bag of polyfill for a week or so, let the polyfill absorb the scent? Don't know it this is a good idea or not!! Smell probably wouldn't last long. I have a bear holding a burlap bag of coffee beans.... smelled yummy for ages!!! The artist used a rubber stamp with a coffee theme and stamped the little bag. Very cute. Try it!!! (The artist was me so I don't mind if you copy!)

Mmmmm the smell of coffee, yummy........

I once coffee dyed some wide lace for an old looking bear I made, it stank!!!!   (Is that a word??)  Well you know what I mean, I tried fabric softener, hair conditioner, everything I could think of to get rid of the smell, if only it did smell of lovely coffee, but it didn't!!!

It was only cheap instant, perhaps the filtered would linger longer.......sorry I've been no help, one day I will I PROMISE, but good luck in your coffee smell find.   I did have a gift from a friend who honeymooned on the Dominican Republic who brought me back a tiny little sack of coffee beans, they smelt wonderful for ages, maybe....?   I also bought some incense burning oil in the scent of coffee once........wouldn't last long but......oh well, that's about all I can come up with, I'd love a bear that smells like fresh baked bread, but that would only make me hungry so no, let's not go there!!!    Well they already do chocolate scent don't they...........??

Anything will be better than the stink of my dyed lace!!!!  bear_grin

Gina ~ will i have stinky mohair with brewed coffee?

gotobedbears Posts: 3,177

Hi Deb,

Pop a little cotton bag of coffee beans in the bears tummy - i can't see a problem with that - or use some coffee scented oil. You can buy it here so expect you'll be able to buy it where you are too - it is used as a room scent mmmmm loverly

Penny

p.s. i have used coffee for dying loads of times, it gives a softer browner colour than tea which is quite a tan brown - but the smell always disappeared after rinsing.

I have dyed mohair with coffee, and I agree with Penny.  It gives a very nice color, but the scent will not last.

Oh Yes Clare - me and George are like THAT (imagine fingers crossed tightly here)

In fact, me and George knows everything about bears cos we discuss them all the time while he hand feeds me chocolate M and M's in front of a roaring log fire..........

Okay - back to reality  bear_cry

Pen, that was a lovely vision!

Deb, I doubt scented oil smells will last long because most are full of alcohol (no, don't drink it!) and it evaporates. I like the beans inside a fabric bag in the belly idea or my burlap coffe sack as an accessory. Think you'll get the most smell those ways.

Hey, ya'll.... one of my MANY jobs over the years was being a plant manager for a coffee roasting facility. Mind you I hated coffee then!!!!! But the smell of freshly ground coffee, just being packaged, was to die for! Oh, the stories I could tell you..... green beans, straight from whatever country/island we imported them from stunk!!! What an awful smell. But the assortment of treasures that came inside those bags along with the raw beans.... coins, switch blades, jewlery, candy wrapers.... I won't mention the exotic critters! By the time the beans were sifted through, roasted at 500 degrees f., ground and packaged all that was left was a yummy pot of coffee just waiting to be brewed so no worries!

I will say, the smell stayed on my clothes, shoes and driver's seat of my car for ever!!!

Hugs,
Daphne

PS... LOOOOOOOVE coffee now! Flavored only!! Belgiun Chocolate Nut....Mmmmmmmmm!

I'm going to do the accessory idea I'm pretty sure.  I found the cutest thing to embroider on, and go figure, it happens to be a free download!  Whoohoo!  http://www.aadmall.com/closeup.asp?sear … 4&offset=0  If I can't reduce it small enough for an accessory bag, I'll leave full size and make a large coffee bean bag for her to sit on.

Flavored only Daphne?  Well, we could still share a cup.  I prefer a dark roast, no flavor.  Sometimes put in a scoop of flavored with the other, but not normally.  Cream (half and half), just a little, no sugar.

yuuuuuuummm - i can almost smell that coffee Daphne, in fact i have just made myself a gorgeous cup of real cappuccino. I love the noise the machine makes as it froths the milk and i like to dip choc chip cookies in it too

No wonder i'm fat!!

GREAT ... just GREAT Penny ... now I have to stop at the coffee shop on my way home.  Awesome coffee and nearly as awesome baked goods.  What the heck ... it's cookie and brownie week anyway.     (First time I've ever clapped for cookie and brownie week.)

gotobedbears Posts: 3,177

I'm clapping for cookie and brownie week too

wish we had something like that over here Deb - Britain has gone all health conscious at the moment so not much chance of a cookie week here, more likely a seaweed and tofu week - yuk

I have dyed lace and cotton material with coffee for an old look and it has turned out nicely.
Deb that little cross stitch coffee sampler will be neat and please show us when you finish it.
I am just off to have a cup of coffee and a blueberry muffin.

Oh I was just trying to tell Penny it was just one of those weeks where I was feeling oh what the heck .... might as well just eat brownies and cookies all week (but mostly brownies).  So it was kinda just on my calendar.  All set now Daphne?   bear_grin
