Is there a difference in using candle wax and beeswax on noses for bears? What is the prefered thing to use? THANK YOU PAM hello is nesie
Hi, Pam. I've always used beeswax and never tried candle wax so can't give you a comparison. Anyone used candles before???
I know this is silly but do you just heat it and rub it on the nose? Are there different knids of beeswax? THANK YOU for your time
Hi Pam,
I've never used candle wax, only beeswax, or ezywax. If you do a search and enter wax, I'm sure you'll find some info, we had this topic on the go not so long ago!!
Good luck, and welcome to the forum!!
Yes, as a matter of fact . . . go to the "Reference Library" forum and there is a topic on noses.
OH great! I am new here:clap:
Well, a great big welcome to Teddy Talk, Pam! Love your name as my younger daughter is also a Pam. So glad you joined us and hope you have lots of fun!!
Hi Pam ~
Welcome to Teddy Talk. You should head over to the New Members area and introduce yourself. Someone may miss you here on Techniques if they didn't want to read about noses.
Hi Pam,
Welcome, I'm new too and these are beary nice people
I used candle wax once when I was out of bees wax and HAD to finish the bear quickly.
The results were OK, but difficult to do. I lit the candle and dripped some wax into a saucer and used a brush to put it on the nose. I then gave it a polish when set. It doesn't give you the versatility of beeswax as you can't add more and just hope to get it in the right place when wet.
Hope that helps,
Glenys
Hi Pam,
The best thing EVER for noses is shoe polish !!!
It comes in all colours including clear - let it dry completely then buff.
It's permanant and gives a wonderful lustre. I never found beeswax to work as well as shoe polish and it has a tendancy to go white yuk!
Try it out - Welcome to Teddy Talk, hope to talk again soon
Penny
Pen - Doesn't shoe polish smell? Seems like when I was a kid and watched dad polish his shoes that the polish smelled. Perhaps my memory isn't that good. It sounds like the perfect thing to use!!
Yes, it does smell but only when it's applied. After it has dried and buffed it does'nt smell at all.
I must stress that you don't have to whack it on with a trowel, you only need a little bit so the 'pong' is'nt really an issue Daphne.
I never see the point of using specialised stuff when sometimes what you already have around the house does the job better. No doubt someone will prove me wrong here but i have always found it great to use with a super finish.
Penny
Hey Penny - a girl after my own heart -
what a great economical idea - and I love the smell of shoe polish from a tin
I will be trying it in the near future - but is it real shoe polish or that stuff that you squeeze through a sponge -
Anne
No Anne, the proper stuff in a tin.
I must admit that i LOVE the smell of shoe polish just be careful to keep it off of the surrounding mohair Anne as it's a devil to get off.
Penny
i forgot to say that my great grandpa was a cobbler and we used to have all his tools around the house when i was a kid. Maybe that's why i love the smell of shoe polish and crave new shoes like a maniac!
Penny- you are so smart!!!! '
What a great idea
My concern with candle wax is that it might leave a coating you can see.....hmmmm
who is going to try it?
Pam and Glenys Hoorayyy Glad to have you both here-sorry - I am always a little bit behind- mainly because I get caught up in computer projects that are way over my head....But we are so glad to have you BOTH here and hope you stay.
BTW.....they did tell you the TT rules didn't they?
We are very strict about these rules too.....
Gotcha PICTURES....we love pictures, of you ,your kids, your pets, your gardens, your stashes, your creations, your weddings....am I forgetting anything?
We love pictures
hope you both have digital cameras

Dilu
shoe polish, what a neat idea! I have been too chicken to try beeswax or anything like that, but I think I could handle the shoe polish. Thanks Penny!!!
Susan
PennyPoo ~ Have you been holding out on us? What a great idea! (I need a practice bear!)
Well, I'm a bit late chiming in here... but I also make candles so I have plain candle wax around the house too!
Different candle waxes have different melt points (temperature at which they melt) Beeswax has one of the higher melt points.
I wouldn't see a problem with using pillar candle wax as that is hard also (beeswax is a bit harder though)
If I had to use wax from an existing candle I'd chop off a chunk and melt it in a small dish on my mug warmer. Do NOT put paraffin in the microwave!!! It WILL spark! Beeswax is OK in the microwave though because it is natural. (paraffin is a petroleum product)
Many hobby stores do carry beeswax now
A wax to avoid is soy wax... VERY soft!
But shoepolish ehh Penny? I'll have to try that out! I also love the smell of shoe polish Reminds me of my dad polishing his shoes for work (police officer)
PENNY!!! would leather dubbin do the trick? How long does it take to dry/set? could you post a pic of the boot polish you use? Matilda
Here's a couple of piccies of the polish i use Matilda.
I have never used leather dubbin and would'nt know it if i fell over it ha ha ha -
I generally sew black noses so the black polish does the trick for me, but i know that shoe polish now comes in lots of fancy colours for those of you who have a few pairs of Jimmy Choos
The other colours tend to come in tubes and i have'nt tried them out so i can't vouch for them personally but would imagine that if they do exactly the same as ordinary shoe polish they should be good for noses too.
PenPen
Maybe I missed this, but how do you put the shoe polish on the nose? Kim T
"A nose by any other color smells the same " hee, hee...just a bit of trivia here....Winney
Hi Kim.
I personally just use my fingertip as you don't have to put lots and lots of shoe polish on - if it needs another coat i add more until i get the finish i want. Just let it dry and buff it up between coats.
WINNEY - you are MAD MAD MAD but i love you he he he
I've added a piccy of a bear with a shoe polished nose - His name is Bennett
Penny
Interesting Idea Penny, I'll have to try that out.
Thanks for all the pictures as well.
And as for answering the question, I tend to leave my noses just the way they are after I embroider them, so I can't be of much help.
Heather
Ahh Penny, Bennett is gorgeous!!
I have a question, what do you buff with?? You've probably already said, but I can't see
Thanks!
