Well this is the very first year that I can remember the weather here in Alberta being sooooooooooooooo nice for halloween.  Usually it is either snowing or it is so cold and windy that you just take the kids to a few houses

This year it is +19c so I prepared for approx 90 kids - I usually get around 30.  Well I had the whole sum total of 2.  I CAN'T believe it I have soooooooooooo much candy and junk that I don't need UGH

Hi, Jane!

Sorry you didn't get so many Trick or Treaters.  :(
Maybe some of your Bears can help you eat all the leftover treats.  ;)

Some years we get over 100 Trick or Treaters but this year we only saw about 50-75.

All the kids who have Bear Costumes get extra candy from us but we didn't see any Bear costumes this year.  :(
One of the Moms who was escorting kids was dressed in her jammies and had a Teddy Bear with her so we gave her kids extra candy.
We gave a couple of packages of Skittles to the mom and told her to make sure the Bear gets some!

Trick or Treat hours were 6 to 8 PM in our neighborhood.  Kids started rolling by at about 6:15 and were out in full force by 6:30.  By 7:30 they had tapered off to a trickle and everybody but one group of kids were gone by 7:45.  We didn't get any stragglers at all this year.  Some years we still have a few wandering by until about 8:15 but not this year.

We live on a corner lot at the intersection of two of the main streets in our subdivision so Melanie and I sit out on the stoop and act as the neighborhood watch.  We turn on the police scanner and listen in case of trouble.  Most years there are one or two mischief-related calls on the radio.  Mostly just older kids harassing younger kids.  But, this year, there were no calls at all.

There was no egg throwing, no tee-pee-ing...  Nothing!
It was a very quiet Halloween here in Erie, Pennsylvania!

Here is our annual Halloween Bear portrait:

Sorry, I didnt have that many either and we had nice warm weather for a change. Plus being on Friday night ....I only had about 75 kids, as it got later in the night I started giving them about 5 pieces each.  bear_grin  I don't want it around....I would gain 5 pounds!  bear_grin  bear_grin

We got about 40 kids, which isn't a lot.  Hubby stayed home to give out the candy, while I went to my daughter's to give her candy out, while she took our grandson trick or treating.  She got quite a few as they live in a subdivision with lots of young families.

I sure don't miss the way it was in Kemptville (our old house).  We lived in a big rural subdivision and it was the only one around.  People would bring in kids by the busload!  The police actually used to block of the entrances to the area, as there were so many vehicles.  I used to aim for 250 kids and we ALWAYS ran out.  There were between 400-500 kids EVERY YEAR. The last couple of years, we got so fed up, we gave out candy to the local kids early and then treated ourselves to dinner out.  We got sick of teenagers banging on the door as late as 10:30 at night.

Yikes - this is SO strange to us Europeans - trick or treat just isn't such a big thing here! The sweetie  manufacturers on your side of the "pond" must LOVE Halloween.

We get none. The shops try and promote it but its not a big thing here. My kids on the other hand, had a tantrum because they wanted to, but I told them the neighbors would have nothing for them as we don't do that in Aus. They cried, truly! And said they want to live elsewhere. LOL

Well for the fourth year in a row we didn't buy any candy.  We live in a spooooky old house down a very long driveway ~ right across from a cemetary  bear_ermm  bear_shocked

I admit, we were tempted to strew out one or two fake dismembered limbs, but thought that would be a bit too much.  I swore if anyone ever knocked on the the door, I'd give them $5 to go glut themselves on candy bars.  No one came, though.  Not a soul  bear_whistle

It was lovely weather here as well but as usual we had about 8 kids come. We live in the country so only a couple of the neighbours brought their kids. I have candy left over and will send it to the neighbour next door - hunting season is starting Monday and they'll need goodies to keep them going!

I've not been feeling well so my neighbor brought me candy with my mail.  (He brings the mail to us every day because our mailboxes are down our 1/2 mile gravel driveway and he thinks it's a waste of gas for both of us to go).  bear_original  Sweet ol' guy.   The only trick or treaters I get are in the form of four cats...orange, white, black and then a grey/black stripey thing.  I have Halloween all year.  My kids are too old.

Awe Jane I bet you are disappointed. We live way out in the country and had no little ones. I really miss the cute little guys from when we used to live in town.

Awe, well that sucks. My Parents live in the country and I think they had about 15 kids. That would be a huge disapointment to get all ready and have no one come. bear_sad
I had about 55 kids.. which I don't know if that is alot or not. This is my first full Halloween in my house. BUT I had so much fun decorating and Brad and I scared the bigger kids. It was a blast. Some of the kids were too scared to come up to the house.. lol. I ran out in my witch costume and made them come up.. heehee.  bear_grin
The other homes on the block next to mine get right into Halloween.. I don't think there was a house without decorations. One had a guy running around with a Chain saw.. lol.
I'm just uploading some pics and a couple videos to my blog if anyone wants to check it out.
Hugs,
Melanie

We had warm weather weather too last night...for a change.  However trick-or-treating in Luxemburg takes place the Sunday before Halloween every year.  So last Sunday was cold a rainy but we still took the kids out for a quick go around my mom's block.  It's so much fun.

I can sympathize with you, Jane . . . I bought a HUGE bag of candy, plus some Halloween pencils and pumpkin erasers.  (I always like to give out something that doesn't rot teeth along with the candy.)  We had about 10-12 kids and none after about 9:00pm.  Will candy freeze?  I'm thinking about just holding it over until next Halloween!  bear_tongue  bear_tongue  bear_tongue  bear_tongue

Sue Ann,
We've frozen candy before, when our kids were young.  It was the only way to ration the bags of candy they got at Halloween.

Awe Jane sorry to hear all was quiet near you and it is sooooo big over in the good old USA.  We are starting to get into the swing of things here in the UK.  My kids and I joined my best friend and her family and a few other kids and went trick and treating for about an hour (between rain showers  bear_grin ) and then went back to my friends house for hot dogs and a scary movie - we had a great time and came home about 9pm to put the kids to bed.  I just wished we had a set time like you do Us Bears, I had teenagers banging on my door at 10pm and I nearly gave them a trick to remember   Only thing is I aso bought sweets for the tricksters and we were out all evening so my kids have enough sweets til next year  bear_grin

Ali,
There is no set time for trick or treating in North America.  They usually start at dusk, with the wee ones, which are absolutely adorable and most things are wrapped up by 8:30 or so.  Unfortunately, there are always teenagers banging on doors late in the evening, when things should be finished, and most of them with no costumes, looking for a free handout with no effort. I ignore them or say we are out of candy, even if we aren't.  They annoy me to no end!   If we have too much left over, I'll send it to work with hubby.  It gets gobbled up VERY quickly by their large staff and better them than me  !

You're right.  There is no standard time for Trick or Treating.  Trick or Treat hours are usually passed by city, borough or township ordinances in these parts.

Most towns set their Trick or Treat times the same.  Usually 6:00 PM till 8 or 9:00 PM.
A few towns set their T-or-T hours on Oct. 30.  (I don't know why.)

We don't mind getting a few late-comers but, if somebody rang our doorbell for Trick or Treat much past 9:00 PM and we didn't know them, they'd have a house full of peeved-off Bears to deal with!   bear_shocked

It'd be like a scene from Gulliver's Travels!   bear_grin

Can't believe I spent about $20 on assorted candy, the temp. was about 65 here and got NODDA, not one trickt or treater.

I wasn't aware areas actually set times for trick or treating?  Certainly not anywhere I've lived.  It's left up to the discretion of the parents.

Do you think more and more parents are taking kids to parties?  I don't know, but I think Hallowe'en is tradition and the kids should get to go round to the doors, as long as they are safely accompanied by adults, at least for a few years when they are young.  It certainly does seem that there are less and less trick or treaters every year.

There are no set times here either, I shut it down around 9:30 when I got 2 kids who were not kids at all.. so I thought it was time to put the goodies away.
Many parents here take the kids to the mall.. It's warm and snow is never an issue... I just don't see the fun in that though! Running through the streets in the dark, costumed that was just the best part of Halloween.

Oh, my gosh!  My brother and I used to have military style planning sessions the night before!
We'd draw maps of the neighborhood and plan out the best routes to maximize our treats-per-distance ratio.  We'd say things like, "Don't go to the old lady who lives in the old house on the corner because she gives out mushy apples!"  and "Make sure we get to Mr. Jones' house early because he gives out big candy bars!"

We laid out all our stuff and made checklists of everything before going to school in the morning so that we wouldn't have to waste time getting ready after we got home.

Yeah, those were the days!  bear_grin
