For artists and collectors sponsored by Intercal...your mohair supplier and Johnna's Mohair Store
I just read an auction and noticed that the artist was explicit about NOT sending her work overseas.
Why would someone refuse a sale simply because of postal address?
What are your thoughts?
Do you sell that way?
Discussion peoples.....I have heaps of questions but dont know them to formulate them
I simply dont understand
Not sure why this person does not want to post overseas after all the buyer pays the postage.
I will sell my bears to whoever and wherever they live..
I don't know what the reasoning would be. We love to ship our bears all over the globe...And we pay for the shipping worldwide for all of our website bears.
I love it when we ship to a new country - and I like to keep track of which countries our bears are residing in.
I ship all over the world too. .. all my ebay auctions have free shipping to anywhere. I've seen some auctions that say that they won't ship to certain countries because of postal problems, but I've never had any problem to any destination. I think it's exciting to ship overseas and to be able to talk to people from different languages!! It can be a challenge when they don't speak very good english, but so far it's worked out great for me!
I love to send my bears all over I will offer to pay the extra postage between international and registered international to know that they are signed for at the address they are sent to (for my own peace of mind really)

I have sent bears and fabrics all over the world, I have never had any problem. I do know that you can only ship US priority mail on line. 1st class has to be taken to the post office, which is a pain. On ebay I just do calculated shipping and let them figure it out. I have never had a problem or a package lost.

I have never had any problem.
That's just it... perhaps this person has. Many have shared horror stories here of international shipping gone wrong for one reason or another. Many people don't want to get burned twice. Its like having a really bad meal at a restaurant or one that gave you food poisoning... do you go back again? Perhaps this artists had in incident with int'l shipping that cost her more than the bear was worth. For this person's situation perhaps it was the right business decision.
I have no idea who this post is referencing nor have I seen the auction........ so I don't know why they won't ship outside of their own country but they just might have a very good reason. Or they are new to the whole thing and the thought of shipping a bear overseas is just an unknown, scary thing. There are two sides to everything.............
OT - Melissa - Baby French BullDog - what a STUNNING piece of work!! You TTers are pushing the envelopes SOOoo far open with open/close upper & lower eye lids. I hope he goes well beyond his Reserve!
OK, now back ON topic. Once the client has Pd, there should be no problem. Perhaps a Seller has not used Paypal but instead, the eChecks or their own CC services or other means and gotten burned...?
As is said "Once burned; twice shy."
For all the few problems there have been, hundreds of thousands of transactions end very satisfactorily and seamlessly every day through eBay and their Paypal sister.
Amen... same here; no probs or lost pkgs, 1st class or Priority!

I was burned more than once while I had my shop shipping overseas and in the end I refused to deal with one country in particular as they seemed to have more problems than any other. Especially once, with a credit card payment the buyer after requesting all these special things then claimed non- delivery and DESPITE INSURANCE!! still stopped payment on the credit card and I was left nearly $1000AUD out of pocket!! Even the credit card company admitted I did nothing wrong and I could prove the item was posted and that I complied with all their requests etc but as the "customer" did not receive their goods (their word against mine and the receipted delivery!!) I was left the victim..........yep I refused to deal overseas again with that country!!
So experiences like that may leave a nasty taste.
Ouch... I don't ship Internationally (anymore).... yup, I got burnt.....
It's not that I don't want to... I'll admit, I need to learn more about it and forget the past.
I shipped a lovely bear, to a lovely lady in another country; and what she didn't know, and what I didn't know, is that she needed to pay a customs charge in order to claim her package. Well, I ended up paying the customs charge (neither of us knew this would happen)... and short story was, I basically gave the bear away. (It was an eBay auction... not a huge transaction)
And then there was another situation.... So I got sceered...
Anyway, being here on TT and visiting with all you incredible artists in other countries... I know I will have to take the leap. Perhaps I will ask for assistance at that time. And just DO IT!!!
I do appreciate all your help. I just logged on to see what was going on.. and here it is. A lesson. Vicki
OT - Melissa - Baby French BullDog - wh … s Reserve!
OT.... Thank you Bobbie!!
About overseas shipping again... I haven't had a problem, but the other posts reminded me of a problem someone else I know had. To help the collector save on shipping, she used small packet shipping. It didn't have a tracking number & before there was even time for it to arrive, the buyer put in a paypal dispute. Without the tracking number, my friend lost out. Now all of her packages (& my packages ~ I learned from her experience) have tracking numbers & insurance.

There have been several times for me especially shipping to the UK when I have had customers complain bitterly to me about customs charges. More than once I have been told I should change the customs forms, and either mark the price of the item down, or mark it as a gift. They have even complained in my feedback about this. I now put a note at the bottom of my auctions for international buyers to please be aware of the customs that their country may charge them. I will not change forms or mark items as gifts. This has cut down on buyers from the UK unfortunately, but I have not had anymore complaints.

some scary stories. I suppose it would and could stop people from sending international for awhile.
I havent had any problems yet...touch wood.
Advice for newbies...... dont let your customers bully you. Sometimes losing a customer can be good business practice.
In this bad economy I think it would be bad for business to limit your selling options. I have never had a problem selling internationally but I have always put on my website and in my auction listings the warning about possible Duty or Customs Fees being added on to their international packages...and just in case my collector did not bother to read that warning, I would always repeat it in my emails before shipping. I've had a couple of collectors who said they understood....but then they were still a little surprised when they got the extra bill that was more than they expected...but they were never mad at me because I did warn them ahead of time.
And I always ship insured priority or insured express and I often share in the shipping expenses in order to do this....I think it is important to track and protect your teddies while they travel.

Hi Wendy, If it was my auction you saw, that was a total mistake. I always ship world wide and have bears and other animals in 19 countries. Most of my work has been going overseas. I made a mistake on my listing on B4B which read that I woudl not ship overseas......which is not the way it should have read. Since I did not notice my mistake and no one brought it to my attention it stayed on my listing for the entire week and may have cost me the sale.
Thanks for the advice, Joanne. This has been an enlightening post. I'll take the leap after the Thanksgiving Holiday and take it from there. Vicki
Hi Judi, NO it wasn't your listing. If I had seen it I would have let you know.
I did get a reply from the auction I queried and it also was a mistake which they rectified.
Since they were selling quite a lot it could have meant a lot of lost sales.
