One son has already "mentioned" several times that his daughter does not have one of my bears. I did buy some nice synthetic fur, child safe joints and eyes so it can withstand being played with. My only question is I handsew all my  bears, not because I don't or can't sew by machine, I just like them better that way. I double stitch all seams. Would these bears be safer for the kids if they are machine sewn?

Maybe it's just me, but I feel perhaps you'd be better off machine sewing this? It depends on your granddaughter's age, but if she's a toddler......they are highly, unintentionally distructive. If she's younger, she might be gnawing on the thing, pulling it's arms, swinging it around. Machine sewing just feels a little tougher and more consistant to me for better wear and tear.

I make child safe bears and yes I machine sew all my bears.  I hand sew on the ears of some and others I design the pattern to machine sew these in too.  I know they are pretty indestructible as I have been doing this for 30 years and they are still all together and I haven't had to repair any of them.

I handsew all my bears so I don't know about machine sewing but I would think that the most important thing for safety is the strength of the thread you sew with if you hand sew.I sew all my bears including my minis with bonded nylon so they have strong seams. As long as you sew small tight stitches and are using strong threads I wouldn't think that there should be a safety issue with this.
