Well we saw the vet today and although I didn't know it dogs have a third eyelid!!!!. The dog is able to retract the eyeball backwards into the socket and coupled with this is the third eyelids ability to slide up over the retracted eye. So what I thought was the sclera was actually the third eyelid. Thankfully it returned to normal and Billy is his usual happy self with healthy eyes. If the eyelid prolapses then it is known as cherry eye.

My old dog had something similar to that for a while. Made her look like a zombie!!

Oh boy Gail!! Good to know all is well.
My girlfriend has Bull Dogs and they are ALWAYS getting Cherry Eye and have needed surgery. It's a well known problem I guess in Bull Dog.
Best to in the year to come too.

Hi Gail,  Yes that has happened to my dogs, one had to have surgery. Glad it was nothing serious.

My thanks to all of you for responding to my posting re Billy and his eye .Being a nurse all you can think of is brain tumour or something neurolgical so it was a relief to find out it was not serious
