Little Leaf Bears by ShannaHi everyone-
I'm trying to design a new pattern for a bear with a nice wide forehead and when I make the gusset really wide, it seems to make the head too triangular, however, when I put in darts they create little points in the forehead. Any suggestions?

Shanna, have you tried sewing the darts after you've put together the rest of the head? That way, it's easy for the dart to cross over the seam. (You're darting both the gusset and the side piece with this technique.)
I'm not positive that would help since I'm not sure what could be causing the points, but it's something to try.

Not sure on this but if you add "width" to the forehead...would it help to also add width going down the back of the head? This way it wouldn't pull everything down so much into a triangle.
Also, maybe try adding some extra from the neck seam toward the back on the side pieces. In other words, not such a severe curve on the back of the head.
Trial and error, right? Try and try and try....that's how it seems to go with me :crackup:

Little Leaf Bears by ShannaThanks for your suggestions. I have already tried adding width to the forehead which left me with to triangular a shape towards the top of the head. It's hard to explain. I thought I would round it out by adding darts, but the darts make little points where they end so that wasn't working either. Maybe someday the mystery will be solved. Thanks again!

Try longer, more narrow darts. This should give you a more gradual curve and not make points. When I put darts into a gusset, I align them so they are on the very top of the head where I typically place the ears.

This was a pattern for that Cream with rose tip fabric (I washed it and air dried it and it is just DIVINE, so soft and fluffy). I got impatient and just ended up giving her a standard gusset, but will try your suggestion on my next pattern. Now I need to find some Pearl cotton in a nice charcoal gray for a nose!

Back Road BearsYes, what Alison suggested is exactly what I do and it makes a wonderfully rounded head! Long and narrow is the key!
