Yep, I was married to a engineer for 11 years...he may not have mentally or emotionally analyzed things but he'd take ANYTHING apart to "fix it" or "make it run better"...which does have it's up side.

My uncle...the mechanic...was the same way!!!

I know they say you should never discuss religion on public boards...but I felt so sad when I read your email that I wanted to respond. Please know I'm not trying to start a debate or open a can of worms, and certainly not offend anyone. bear_innocent

I feel so sad that you had such bad experiences with the Church. Sometimes people get it all messed up don't they?
I grew up in a strong Christian family that were a bit over the top at times too. Now that I'm grown up and have my own family, I don't attend a church at all because I hate the cliqueyness of such groups and for some reason, the lingo really turns me off.

BUT, I have kept a very strong personal faith and have chosen to put blinkers on with regard to all the stuff that goes along with being a Christian. The way I feel is that I have a genuine and quiet relationship with God and it's a very personal thing. Some people try to tell me that if I'm not involved in the church, I'm not truely committed. But I believe a persons faith and the fact that they believe is the only thing that really matters, and I do hope that one day you will rediscover God's love in your own personal way, and that a single bunch of nutters doesn't rob you of the peace He brings.
Our faith in God is something that no other person on earth can judge and these cult like organisations have a lot to answer for.
Hugs to you

I am married to a mechanical engineer.

My experience is:

They have no common sense
Think too much about unimportant stuff (OK, unimportant to a woman anyway!)
Take a 15 minute task and turn it into a half a day's work

My ex-husband was a chef. Sure, the hours were awful but Thanksgivings were delicious and it was actually FUN to entertain because I could decorate, clean, etc. and he'd do all the menu planning and cooking. The rest of life with him was a different story.

But you see, no matter what they do, no matter their profession, they have their ups and downs.

Not sure I could stand the over-analysis of EVERYTHING but it's as bad as not giving any thought at all to cause and effect on our relationship which is what I live with. But if anything needs to be fixed it does get done.... one step at a time, the hard way!

Dilu - You are cracking me up with all those smilies! I went to that site and got a good chuckle! Have you tried designing your own??? You can do that on there!

Hayley,

Again, you have a way with words! I echo your feelings to the letter. I don't attend a church either but have a very strong relationship with God and feel no less a Christian because I'm not 'inolved' or have christian fellowship in a church setting. My faith is personal and God knows my heart. That is what's important to me.

Daphne

PS. That's not to say I don't agree with being part of church, it's just that since we moved last year I have yet to find a church that feels right...... but I'm looking!  bear_innocent

I've been a nail biter all my life too.....until I got serious about my bears! 18 months ago I was picturing showing a bear to a customer with my stubby horrible bitten nails...and cringed. Then I pictured holding the bear with lovely long nails and it just felt so good.
I have given up once or twice before but never lasted more than a few months. My nails are very bendy and breaky or bend backwards easily. BUT, I have now had them long for 18months, and although I bit one nail off a few months back...I believe I am cured. I chastised myself so much for biting that nail off and made myself compare it to my other nice nails...and it grew back straightaway.
I have found a product that truely helps...it's called Revitanail and you can get it at Chemists. My nails were always seethrough, thin and never white...now they are. And they rarely bend backwards now either. You put a coat of this stuff on each day for seven days and then remove it and start again. It is like nail hardener but has nail nourishment properties too and it really makes them grow fast.
I have had acrylic nails in the past and when I finally had them removed (got too expensive) my nails were like glad wrap. Also, you do actually have to have a bit of growth before they can apply them...so I figured if I could stop biting long enough to grow a few mm then I could stop full stop.
The secret is to know when you bite the most...for me it was watching telly or reading. Buy a pair of those light white cotton gloves and put them on in danger times until you get some growth going. Even 18 months down the track...I can't stop admiring my new nails...an I'm really proud of myself. :cake:
Not to mention how much my hubby loves them...especially having my run them thru his hair...putty in my hands.
He used to say to me that the only thing he hated about me was my nails. And it does look yuk when you see someone chewing. bear_ermm
So c'mon you nail biters...stop today!!!!

Hmmmm....Tricky territory this. Secrets that my friends don't know but I am willing to expose to the world via cyberspace. Makes for a pretty short and boring list from me. Oh well, lets see.....

I get SAD and I am a food addict too, but that's not really much of a secret since I'm overweight and often get the blues for no reason, crying in my cocoa.  bear_cry

I force myself to eat vegetable so I can have dessert. Boy is that childhood conditioning is powerful stuff or what? scary.

I'm addicted to the show  "Survivor."    Do they have meds for this?

Heres the big one:
I'm not too bothered by most bugs, spiders, mice, or even snakes.... but throw any type WORM (or caterpiller) on me and watch me come COMPLETELY un-glued!!!  Weird, huh?  bear_wacko   I have always tried to keep this under wraps because I'm afraid someone will use it against me. Seriously, its true....
What? Paranoid? Me? Noooo... Not me!    bear_ermm .....Uh, why do you ask?  What have you heard???!

Boy that is a pretty boring list. Sorry. Go to the next post quickly please! I'm going to go medicate myself with some chocolate. bear_grin

this is for Hayley and Daphne

25cents of  religious ideas

From what I can see, every single religion that says its "the only way" is putting God in a box.  Even calling God God is putting him in a box.  Even assuming a gender.....there's that box thing again.

I figure that the Ultimate is so far beyond my understanding and comprehending, that my poor pea brain can't wrap itself around all the mystery and wonderment and truth.

And maybe there is a place in the world for the various religions, I don't know.  Everyone has to come to God at their pace and level of understanding.

But, let me try to explain something I do know, from so many experiences, that it is part of my DNA now......it is like we are all on this realy really loooooooooonnnnnggggggg train.  And eventually the train will pull into the station.  And some of us are in the cars up front, and they get to get off the train earlier than those of us who are in the cars farther back.  But eventually we will all get to the station and we will all get off the train.

But it's not up to me to say who gets off first or last.  i'm not in charge.  That's the station master's job.  He's in charge.  And he does a much better job than I could ever do.

And when I leave myself open to the mysteries and the magic and beauty of truth, real truth, ultimate truth, life is such a fabulous journey and I am so grateful to have had the chance to live it.  And I want to thank the Station Master for such a great ride.

Love to you both, you'll find your place and you'll find your answers and all I can say is love the adventure.

Hayley, my nails are exactly the way that you described yours...bendy, breaky and they bend over backwards easily. I have tried nail polish and nail hardners and they didn't work. I am going to look for Revitanail and give it a try. Thanks!

OK, this conversation is moving way too fast for me to keep up with  bear_grin

Daphne, if you plan to move to the Rochester region I'll have to insist on that you get your head examined first!  And not just because I'm here  bear_tongue  Nah, parts of it aren't that bad.  Besides, they just added arches over the thruway that runs through the city.  So now we have... what... 300% more arches.  I knew you'd be impressed.  Every time I drive through them I think 'This is what my tax dollars went for?!?!?!'

Actually, I'm still stuck on the thought of 3 1/2 canoes in this conversation.  I would think that 1/2 a canoe would imply that it was on the bottom of the lake somewhere.

Cheers,
Kelly

LOL!!!!  yep, I'm waiting for an explanation on that too  bear_grin

And Hayley and Daphne... thank you!  It has taken a LOT of time... but time really does heal all wounds.  Just slowly.....   When my Grandma died this past fall my mom was asked to ask me to take the gifts up at the mass (I grew up Catholic) and Mom was actually a little afraid to ask me.... she wasn't even sure I'd be IN the church LOL!  But I told her it would be just fine and I would be honored to do it in honor of Grandma bear_original

bear_original Kelly!

You're in Rochester?

Drat, I was just there over T-giving, meeting my almost son-in-law. Curses. I could have at least called.

We spent Saturday morning at David's Bridal. I almost got to spend time in JoAnne's (we don't have such stores here!), but the kids dragged me out.

Monty's house is just across from the Mt. Hope Cemetery (beautiful in the snow and not at all creepy).

Next time, I'm going to give you a heads-up, and maybe we can meet?

Anyone can come visit me anytime they want.  I have "hostess neurosis."  I LOVE having people over, but am convinced anything and everything I have to offer won't meet expectations, so I get anxious!

bear_grin  Shelli, I know just what you mean! I'm a terrible hostess, totally unable to go through the right routines, can't plan the proper activities, hate sightseeing jaunts, but I have a method--I fill the house with food, and tell guests to make themselves completely at home, help themselves to anything, ask if they don't see what they want, join the family, put their feet up on the tables, take the dogs for walks, feed the cats, etc. Most of the time it works.  bear_grin

bear_sad I sympathize with nail-biters, since one of my sisters is still a nail-biter at 58! I tried it once, but couldn't get my teeth through my nails. Mine grow really fast, and usually get knocked off before I get around to trimming them. What about biting on something else? There must be a plastic substitute people could nibble on?

Bonnie, we must be kindred spirits. I too am deathly afraid of W's and centipeids. Have been all my life. Don't mind snakes, etc but if threatened with a W I would tell all, including where my children were hiding.
The bravest thing I did in my life was: I had brought a pot growing celery in for the winter and it was on a window ledge behind the couch. I watered it and a W actually crawled out of the pot and onto the counch, beside my 1 mth old son. To protect him I grabbed a LARGE handful of kleenix and picked up the W and threw it into the fire. I then broke down crying and shaking. I'm sure the only way I was able to do that was the mother hormones were still strong in me since he was so young.  bear_wub

Daphne.....if you get to move here to the Corning Plant, I would love it. This is beautiful country, not as much woods as New Hampshire, but a lot of water and woods in some places. My daughter lived in Littleton and worked at the Franconia Inn, so I know a little about New Hampshire. My Girl Scout Troop is planning a trip to Franconia State Park in June. Any suggestions of where to go/what to see?

Explanation on the 1/2 canoe. A few years ago my daughter gave Daddy a book on how to build a wood strip canoe. So, as a winter project he made the first. He likes it, but wanted to change the pattern. Last winter he started on canoe #2, which is still in the basement 1/2 put together..... bear_happy  I think he plans to finish it this winter. I, of course, help him in the best way  bear_original  I stay upstairs working on bears while he goes downstairs and works!  bear_grin

I don't mind spiders and snakes and most other insects, but I have to say worms are really gross! Yet I still put on a happy face when I see one so that my 2-year old daughter will not grow up fearing such things.

We bought our home in Feb. and it had a small fish pond in the back yard. Well, within a couple weeks of living here we managed to kill the fish. Since the fish were already gone, we decided to take out the pond. We'd love to have one but this one was not our taste and located in a goofy spot. Well in the summer we filled up the pond and moved all of the stones that surrounded it. There were sooo many worms and centipedes underneath those darn stones! The centipedes just scurried away but the worms couldn't get into the ground because of the black liner from the pond. I felt terrible for those ugly little things. I thought the scorching sun would fry those little buggers so I scooped them all up with a stick and moved them to the grass. And my little girl was right there with me so, of course, I had to do it with a smile on my face. We had a lovely afternoon chatting with all those darn worms.  bear_ermm

My kids always knew that I was terrified of the W's. I made sure they knew so that I wouldn't find any surprises in pockets, etc. In fact, my whole family knows and understands. Fortunately they are a little afraid of what I would do to them if they ever tried to scare me with a W. I work in a law office and saw a big centipeide on the wall. I screamed and the lawyer had to leave a client to come take care of the creature so I could get down the stairs and out of the office. It's embarrasing at times but a phobia doesn't make allowances unfortunately.

Mysterious things about me.............humm.......not much to tell.  I'm pretty boring.
Tattoos-No ( came close once)
Strange piercings-no

I can relate to the hostess neurosis though.  I too like to have guest, but I am such a perfecftionist that I get terribly stressed trying to make everything perfect.  Unfortunately I hate to cook so that adds to the stress.  I get very cranky before guests arrive then act like it was nothing when they show up !   Martha I'm not !  People pleaser I am- sigh .

I like to be by myself a lot-being an introvert.  I find it hard to make close friends because of it.   I also hate crowds.

Oh yah, I have a phobia of crowded elevators.  I just can't get on when they are full.  I almost panic and have to wait for the next one.  Odd !

Not much else to tell.  Oh, I did help send a pedophile to jail for 7 years.  Now that I am proud of ---the creep.   He used to flash his nakedness at me and he often invited me into his house, thank God I was smart enough to say no. He did nasty things to his daughter.  Makes me sick !  I was too afraid to tell anyone until many years later when he started doing it to others.   Then I got called into the police station to tell my story.   You can bet I drill it into my kids heads to never be afraid to tell me anything.

So those are my secrets.

My hubby stays waaaaay out of my way (usually putters in the garage) when I'm getting ready for company because I get SOOO cranky! (Though he'd use a stronger word!) I have a sign that reads "Martha Does NOT Live Here"!

Hi All

Well, I have Asperger's Syndrome--it is a mild form of high-functioning autism (in plain English, it means difficulties with socialising, among other things.  .)  Not really a secret--but it has been to all of you, up until now!!!
