I have been musing on this for awhile. Is our style inherent in us, or is it something we can work at tocreate?
I would like to do cute. But what comes out is goofy.
I would like to do sweet. But what comes out is goofy.
or wonky.
Several of our mini mavins do sweet and cute. Most of our bigguns creators do adorable cuddely cute Our needlefelters to cute....but
but everyone has their own style
do you feel like your style just happens or do you consciously work at creating it?
They do make a nice couple, though
Going to have to think about this one for awhile, Dilu!!
just happens Dilu......
.......one minute the bear looks like a lump of mohair/fleece then all of a sudden a little character emerges - i don't deliberately set out to produce a particular style.
I believe that the mohair and fleece have the little critters in there already, maybe a hangover from the animal it came from???/
If i start using synthetics maybe it will turn out looking like a mole-cule ha ha ha

oooooerr what's going on? Am i seeing double?
where's the other one gone?...........Dilu........Kim......are you there?
Dilu didnt you just have another post on this?? I just posted to that one but now it is gone....
ANYWHO...
I have my own style... it is nothing that I tried to do it just kind of came out of me... sure, I have taken suggestions like shading and leather eyelids and done my take on it but it is still my own "style" that comes through...
I just do what comes out of me
where's the other one gone?...........Dilu........Kim......are you there?
I was wondering the same thing! LOL dilu, are you screwing with our heads, making us wonky?
I'm getting a little dizzy here, too!
LMAO dilu, what are you doing LOL have the gollys been messing with your computer again LOL
hmmmmmm so Pen thinks she just happened and Kim too
Have you ever started out to do one thing, cute, and gotten smething else?
Yes, for some reason it posted double so I got rid of the other one.....I didn't want anyone to decide I really had lost the last pea out of my brain...I don't know how I did that......
I started my hippo (Margo) as wanting her to be one thing but she turned out as being comical... the gal who adopted her adores her so I guess it doesnt matter.. which, might I add, was the second highest selling feltie of mine!
anywho, she didnt turn out like i envisioned her in my head, if that is what you mean LOL
also, my recent felted monkey actually I wanted him to be a hippo and be a female but we see how that worked but I think he turned out good, even with his "identity" and "gender" crisis! LOL
Seriously Wonks
Any time that i have tried to produce a bear to look a particular way it always comes out lifeless and wrong wrong wrong
Feel the force Wonks, let it flow, don't have too many preconceived ideas and let the work dictate it's own character - it always works honestly.
Try it
Penny
For the most part I just do what feels right :). But I think there are certain features that tend towards cuteness...such as a rounded head and large eyes. I did alter my patterns to incorporate these features, but there still was/is a lot of hit and miss!
I think your minis are lovely Dilu, and have a great deal of charm .
Yeah, what exactly do YOU think of yur bears Wonks - are you unhappy with them? Helena's right, they are full of charm just like your gollies. Do you want your style to be different?
Penny
I like your bears and gollies and needle felted and now thread bears you've been a busy wonkster learning new things! LOL
I personally would like to make my heads more "babyish" but I dont know that I should change them... hmmm...
I love your little ones Dilu! Goofy? No way! Adorable? Absolutely! I think I may be a bit Goofy but I feel in my heart that each little bear we make in our studio has wee little soul. I just carry on and what comes out is the wee little one that I believe God sent! See...Goofy right!
Many Hugs Louise
I think every one develops thier own style. No matter what you are striving for it comes out with your own flare. since I began making bears now two years ago every bear has come out different, I change the patterns alot. Striving for a look I am truly happy with, and that is all my own. I have noticed that the last few patterns and faces have a look that I really love, and is definitely distinctively mine.
I noticed the noses all seem the same??
It is a particular expression I am looking for, I think the last several bears have had this expression. You know what I mean!!!
I personally love how every ones bears are different. It is so good to see other peoples bears.
That's just me!
Love,Kathy
I get visions in my head of what I want a bear to look like but no matter how hard I try it never happens... until the last one I made. FINALLY!!
I think part of it is having expectations that fit your skills, style, etc. There are looks I'd like to create that I just can't do. It's not in me. So, I know what you are experiencing, Dilu.
I've found for me, that it's better to try to perfect the look I can create than make lousy attempts at what I can't and be frustrated!

Well I start out with an idea, " this is gonna be a cute little......" We can't forget the killer bunny.....or pigmonkeybear.
When I do needlefelting it just devlopes. I can't fight it.....but I also only have the vaguest of ideas.
The crocheted bears? Well I've only done two....but they both came out...goofy.
Now, I don't mind goofy. but I would like to do sweet too.. You have all seen Judi's knittie minis.....they are so sweet and cute......
so I just wondered.
Penpen, am I unhappy....well no. I like Dizzy the trumpet player who is now engaged to Penelope the Pink Bear. And I like Penelope.....she looks like she should have a tatoo to go with her navel piercing though.
But I just wondered. How does this happen....what is going on in our heads, our right brains, and how much of it is unconscious, subconscious and conscious...I guess I was just wondering about the process.
I guess I will have to hurry and start something new and analyze the process as I go along.......
I just had a thought....which sells better?
Cute or goofy?
hmmmmm
brain not functioning anymore.......
I agree with all of you... I spoil my daughter so wht can i say yes.....I listen to my bears too...If they want to be some certain way they only know that's fine with me.
Kim, when I cut out your bear i was thinking of something TOTALLY different...you'll get the bear you never seen before...she amazes me too... maybe i'll keep her....don't you think?
All my friends like my anime and character ones...They say too much traditional bears sells in the stores. Those WONKY ones are unique
Found something by accident, on this topic. I often peruse my collection of Mary Englebreit calendars and such (from years past) for ideas about costume, color, and concept, and I came across a great quote she used on one of her pages, that really applies here, Dilu, to your questions/comments about individual artistic style. It goes:
Every artist dips his brush in his own soul,
and paints his own nature into his pictures.
-- Henry Ward Beecher
...so true...
Beautifully said Shelli my love!
