I was wondering if I should switch to private auctions for ebay.  I've noticed that some artists are doing this for good reasons.  I'd like to hear from the collector's point of view... do you prefer private auctions?  does it matter to you if your ebay id shows up as the winning bidder?  Thanks in advance for your answers  bear_flower

Melisa --

I find it somewhat pretentious if the only reason is one of anonymity.  If you're already a signed-up member of something like e-bay and bidding, it shouldn't matter one hoot.  I for one would rather see it as an open -- but that's just me.  Having bid a few times in this way, as well as private, I find the private auctions don't really bring anything worthwhile.

I know some artists used to use private auctions to make it easier for people to bid.  For instance, if I saw a friend bid on a bear - I wouldn't bid against her.  On the other end of the scale, I've heard that some people would bid against certain bidders just for spite.

Now, however, bidders' names are protected in regular auctions till the end.  In  my opinion no need for private auctions anymore.

Thank you Laura Lynn.  bear_flower  I know that when I am bidding on something, I will check the bidders feedback rating to see if I am bidding against an experienced ebayer or someone new to it.  I don't know if it helps, but I can't do that on a private listing.

I always get leery with a private auction, I don't know why I do but to me it's like what are they hiding and I won't bid on a private auction.  It just seems sneaky to me, I mean I don't know any of my friends ebay id's so I wouldn't know if I was bidding against them or not.

I agree with Shane I don't like private auctions either it feels like it's better than everyone else (thats just me though) as far as bidding against people I know or not I have a set figure and if its more than everyones I win if not bad luck for me.

Thank you for commenting Shane & Raewyn.   I know what you mean, Raewyn.  When I see "private" it makes me think of a private club or something.  I'm sure it's not meant that way, but it can be hard to shake a feeling.

So far, it sounds like I should stick with my regular auctions.... ?

As a collector I don't really care one way or the other. I bid on what I like, when I like and don't give two hoots who else is bidding.
Friend or foe, seen or private, who cares...I am not in a bidding war, I just want to purchase the bear that appeals to me at the time.

Tell you what gets up my nose though, is all the lurkers who watch and don't make a rotten bid!! Now that's what I call sneaky!!
