There are several routes you can take depending on your level and what you want to accomplish.
There are lots of free programs for photo editing. One that comes with all current model Macs is iPhoto. For making minor adjustments, cropping resizing and posting on the internet, there's probably nothing better for the price.

However, most free "consumer" programs all limit what you can do with photos because they try to simplify things so most people can do them. If you want to do color and exposure corrections and advanced editing, those programs are not going to help you very much. Most of them don't have layering and blending like the "bigger" programs do.
If you want to do advanced things, you're going to need Photoshop. That's a paid program. It can get expensive. :(
However, there is a free program called GIMP. It is just as good as Phosotoshop. It has all the features of full-blown Photoshop and some people think it's better than Photoshop. The down side is that it doesn't hold your hand like Photoshop does. With GIMP, you are expected to know how to work with digital images and how to accomplish what you want without a lot of automatic doohickeys.

The BIG plus with GIMP is that it is totally free. You never have to pay for it and it is just as powerful as most commercial programs.
Hi Gail, irfanview is a free one and I find it pretty good and the easiest.

desertmountainbearThe one I use the most for just easy editing is Windows Live Photo Gallery. You can download it free online. I love this program. For resizing, organizing, correcting exposure etc.

All of this information is wonderful and very helpful and I thank all of you for the options you have shared. In addition to the photo editing, I need a new logo and was wondering if anyone knows if any of these programs have the capability to create the logo I need or do I have to use a another type of program? I don't have a problem with editing but I admit I am technologically challenged when I try to do anything such as a logo and would welcome any of your more experienced suggestions...PLEASE!

For making my logos and banners I use Adobe Photoshop Elements. It is (almost) easy to use with the help of tutorials on the web. I have the last three versions and to me I do not see much of a difference in them, at least for what I need it for. I think you could purchase a version on the web, amazon or ebay. If you don't get the latest version it should not be very expensive.
