I know the muzzle could be better but this is my first and I really want to see how this looks before making another differently. I can't wait!!!!

Looking good to me!  My mum tried to teach me how to crochet.  She fell off the sofa laughing at me, and I learned a few more swear words, but didn't quite master crocheting bear_laugh

      I am sure that picture would be priceless!

I am teaching my 6 year old daughter and it surely is a lesson from God about patience. My dd6 wants to know how to do it "NOW" and says since she sees how I do it she knows it but then cries when she can't get it. I have to say I am learning two lessons of my own... 1. Next time say no! 2. Patience is truly a virtue and I don't recommend it! LOL

I am sure she will do fine in the end but wow getting there is going to be journey! My dd4 also wants to learn but I said No on that one for sure. I said when you know how to addition, subtraction and how to read then we'll talk.. Now I might have just created a very good incentive for her so I might be putting my foot in my mouth very soon, we'll see on that one though!
At least my boys like sports and other things!

Now, see this was only last year my mum tried to teach me  bear_whistle   She couldn't stop laughing because she says I do so many things with my hands that she just couldn't work out how I wasn't getting it.  Yeah, that helped  bear_laugh

    Now that is a funny mom! There are a few books I taught myself with. 1. Crochet 101 for dummies 2. Crochet Answer book
They are both very very good books! The answer book also comes in knit but I dont knit so not sure how good it is.

I will say that if my dd6 could read I would make her read these books!!!

bear_wub Your first chrochet bear is fabulous.  I love to chrochet, I learned from a girl in grade school, she was from another country and we were good friends. I wonder what ever happened to her.  I moved away when I was 10.  But my mom chrocheted also, so I love to do afghans and baby clothes when the kids were little.  I was thinking of trying a bear also.  Great work.  and come on Katy get the book chrochet for dummies, you will get it.

bear_wub PS - if you want to see chrocheted bears and stuff that will make you wonder how she does that, check the post by lelechka:  Olga does all chrochet and it is unbelievable.  She is featuring what looks like two little dogs right now.  Go on her website and see the rest.  OMG is she good.

Aww thank you !  I will look!
I have to admit, dh saw it and was teasing me saying it didn't look right. After he left I looked at it and truly didn't like the muzzle. It looked too much like a Boxer's mouth(type of Dog in USA) so I took it off and took the black off and redid it. DH walked in and said oh my God honey I didn't mean, I interrupted him saying that it was ok, I looked really good and really didn't like it and wouldn't have liked the end product even though it was my first I really wanted to do a bit better even after saying I wouldn't. I took stuffing out to flatten it and changed the stitch I was using, I also redid the nose and mouth and it came out better. Not perfect but better!  I'm not looking for perfection... that is so overrated anyway... Just a little character for the bear!

I will post a pic tomorrow of the new muzzle.

I fixed the muzzle, here is the front view (some stuffing taken out to flatten the look a bit)

This is a side view. It really does look different from the above pic, I prefer this one at least for now with this bear.

It is looking good.
Katy I had to laugh at your comment about learning to crochet.  I wanted to leatn this too and one Saturday afternoon I sat down in a comfortable chair with instructions and a hook and wool.  I can now crochet a granny square but that is all that I can do.  I wanted to learn so that I could crochet bears - like I don't have enough to do with sewing them.  I want to crochet miniatures though and I want to crochet them now so I need a bear made out of a granny square and I will be happy!

clarebear, if you can do a granny square you can follow the basics! Trust me you will do fine in making a bear out of Single Crochet(SC). Keep working on learning!  Google granny square teddy bear and see if that pulls up some hits, you might have to go to more than just page one but look and see what they have.

I have done several things to adjust this pattern. I found that the body is way to thin at top and the head mounted on top looks like a deer more than a big thick bear so adjusting !!!

I have learned that all peices be done THEN add them, not go by the directions when it say do muzzle and add on to head. I did this and next time I wont do this. I'll do all of them first then start adding them on.

I had the muzzle on and placed the ears in the center of the head and realized the muzzle is off. DH said wow what have you done to this Frankenstein bear? (i had the muzzle off again). I said it has to be reset yet again.

At least I know for next time!

Untitled-1.jpg

After realizing that I didn't like the foot that the pattern said and figured out that the pattern has errors in it I came up with my own. I have never created a pattern before and boy is it a pain in the butt. But it's mine and I like it!

Bears as well all know have 7 pads. 5 for the claws, 1 big one right under the claws and 1 circular one at the heel. Well I have seen my fair share of bears and I know some put 3 stitches to create a "paw" look and some use 4 stitches. I find them all very cute! I really wanted to make my bears paw resemble a real paw and thus I put 5 stitches so it looked more like a real bear.

I used Triple Crochet to create the length, I think next time I will go a bit longer. I used a tan color for the main color and a cream color to create the paw effect. There is some hdc and sc in there as well.

The original pattern is in SC but I needed to use HDC in order to make sure there were no "holes". HDC I feel fills in the "hole" better, SC doesn't do that unless you get them very very tight.

My plan is to create a bear that is in hdc so I will for sure be able to use this paw pattern for another bear I create!

Sweet wee paws.  I use 5 stitches because it satisfies the anal mathmetician in me when spacing them out  bear_happy

I am currently stuck, in the process of working on the house and hoping to finish the paws tonight. I had to take out several rows from the first paw i did because I realized i didn't write down that part of the pattern...Oh I am so mommy brain fried!

But all is well, I wrote it all down correctly and in hopes to finish both. Then reset the muzzle yet again, then do the tail which shouldn't take long.

jissy Posts: 70

Paws are almost done, went back several times yet again and tried to place muzzle properly so it wasn't crooked. Well that didn't work so I made a new muzzle with a different mouth and holy cow would you guess the nose is off SO I am keeping on it like that! This bear wants her mouth to be that way then so be it! I put on the safety eyes and didn't like them so took them and put different ones on them. YES I was able to get the safety eyes off since it is a crochet peice and I just had to pull it over the eye. That plus my multi-tool and a tiny screw driver gets the back off so I can use the eye again!!!! I adore my multi-tool, that and my other knife I never leave home without!

So small black eyes are on and almost done with foot then sew them on. then the tail.

I did a lot of changes to this pattern and I did write down my original work so I don't forget what I did.

My girls want what I made with rainbow colors!!! Oh this should be interesting. we'll see though, I'd like to make them one but I would prefer continuing with this thought and creating my own.

Here she is finished.

I am working on making an original pattern now and learning how to make hearts because my dd6 wants a bear with hearts for the ears, nose, tummy and on paw pads. Big order! for someone who doesn't know what she is doing yet!

bear_wub What a great bear, you did a fabulous job.  I would love to see the heart one when finished since I am a heart freak and collect quite a few of them.
thanx for sharing

It will deffinately be insteresting! I'm thinking of hearts in rounds so that I can do the paw pads with a red heart and pink claws. I'm thinking hdc(half double crochet) would give a tighter hole because what I did with this one you can see a lot of spaces in between and I did them tightly.

Throwing ideas around on paper and on here so I don't forget them!
