MoMMy! I'm scared!!
So sweet. Skunks are good guys. THey are peaceful and eat grubs and other garden nemesis. It's not their fault that their only defense is the smell weapon.

Just some useless facts, if you will...  Skunks can only give two or three good squirts before they have to recharge their tanks.  They can still spray a little bit but it takes as long as a week before their tanks are full again.  The thing is, skunks "know" this.  It's not going to shoot all its bullets in one place if it doesn't have to.  It will save it up until it is needed.  Otherwise, the skunk has little or no defense.  Furthermore, skunks don't like the smell any more than you do.

Simply put, skunks don't go around squirting smelly stuff anywhere they please.  You really have to peeve-off a skunk to make it spray.  90% of the time they give "fair warning" before they squirt.

Also, like you said, skunks eat grubs, insects and spiders.  They'll even eat black widow spiders and scorpions.  They are also enemies of most rodents like rats and mice.

Skunks are related to ferrets so they do have a "musky" scent which stands apart from their defense smell.  Besides that, most skunks don't really smell very much.  Not much more than your pet ferret if it hasn't had a bath in a while.

Just about every "outdoor" dog that I have had has tangled with a skunk but very few have ever tangled with a skunk more than once.  There was only one dog I knew of that would go after a skunk.  He would get "skunked" at least once every summer.  He just didn't seem to care.

If it wasn't for the threat of rabies, there's no reason to fear skunks.  Unless you have a skunk living burrowing under your house or garage or it is otherwise becoming a pest (like digging in your garbage cans) there's little reason to worry about them.  Just let them be.
