Some people do that (appliqué) with the eye patches for Panda bears, remove the fur nap and then sewing the dark patches on top of the light face before setting in the eyes.
They also add Eye Lids by sewing them onto the Face afterwards.

Honestly, people do all sorts of things and use all sorts of techniques..... There's very little that anyone would say 'no, that's wrong, you can't do that ever'. If you think of an idea, it never hurts to try it out- nobody's getting hurt here bear_grin It's how we've come so far with bearmaking in the last 15 odd years....
      I imagine Sewing pieces on over the top tho would not affect the shape, you'd do it more for the colour or texture.
