Well, not completely replicate- just copy the body shape. And not to sell, just to add to the group. What do you think? Is this sort of thing frowned upon? I would just buy the artist's pattern, but the company doesn't sell one.

I would say if you are talking about a manufactured bear then to use it as inspiration would be fine.  To copy an artist bear would be a no no without the artist's permission.  If it is a technique it is one thing, but to copy a design especially if it is unusual will cause trouble.  Even if you make it just for you but post pictures and it looks like you copied something, someone will have something to say.  I have seen it happen enough times to know.

Maybe it would be a good idea to write to the manufacturer/company and ask them.  Let them know exactly what it is that you would like to do and ask them if you have "permission" to do this.  There may be copyright issues etc but they would be the best people to advise you.

At least you will have the peace of mind knowing that you have approached the task in the right manner and have not gone ahead before getting an answer.  Let us know how you get on!

Good luck.

Yes, that definitely sounds like the best way to go, since it sounds like it's not something that I should just go ahead and do. I'll email tonight and see what they say.

Your bears are gorgeous, Marilyn! I've never seen bears so deliciously fluffy, while still managing to keep their shape. I especially like the dark brown one. bear_original

I think it's ok to be inspired...but not to replicate...it would be more of a learning experience to try to make your own version.

I'd have to agree with Jenny ... as much as you might like how this bear looks wouldn't it be more satisfying if you could say that you created your own one of a kind original? I think some of the best bears are the ones with the little quirks and flaws.. it just makes them that much cuter  bear_tongue !
