Well, now I know what I'm doing wrong! On minis, there's not much to pick. I use a toothbrush too (or a bunka brush) and just scrub the heck out of it. If anyone knows where I can get an 'extra-firm' toothbrush, please let me know! Seems all the stores only carry soft and medium.
But on the bigger bears, I've been trimming the fur off the seam allowance. I did get a couple spots where it showed if I didn't sew RIGHT on that line! I never thought to pick the fur from the inside first!!!!!
I think I'll just trim off less and then pick from the inside then outside.

you're right Kim, The Music Man.....and the men in a counter harmonizing thing start singing "Good Night Ladies"   

For some reason this is a particular favorite of our Parrot, Kirah.....she also loves Day-o, and Shake Shake Shake Sonora....( Harry Belefonte) and Wagner and coybow music. 

Eclectic she is.

Back to the fur picking... can I ask something REALLY stupid????????  :redface:

This is really going to sound stupid but what exactly are you doing when picking from the INSIDE????
Before you turn you pick the seam. If there is fur stuck in the seam that will be obvious from the outside then the ends are stick out INSIDE. Pulling them will only make it more obvious on the outside, won't it? You can't PUSH them through to the right side. So, what do you do????

NO it doesn't Daphne- the fur you are picking out from the inside is the fur that is on the 1/4 " seam allowance. Of course if you have trimmed the fur down to the seam allowance before you sew then there will be none to pick. I only trim when I am using a fur with a very long or thick pile. Nancy Tillberg trims the fur away from the seam allowance on her gussett and side head pieces to just beyond the forehead area . This prevents the annoying rooster tails you can have and see especially if you are going to trim the fur from the face area after stuffing

Daphne,I find for me, and remember each person will do what works best for them, that removing trapped fur on both sides of the seam, inside and out, 1. you are getting double the change of removing trapped fur, and 2. you are getting a smoother seam line.
Once stuffed, if you run your finger along the seam line, it will be a smooth line, and it should then not feel bunchy( is there such a word ??) .
Daphne, getting fur trapped , will also depend on how you stitch, hand stitching will eliminate much fur trapping as you will have more control,pile thickness and length will also affect the seam lines.

As I posted on Lynette's other post to me (with PICUTRE!!  :dance:  ) I tuck my fur in as I pin pieces together. And I trim my seam allowances. So, I don't have all the fur sticking out inside my pieces. I can see the reasons for pulling from inside as I imagine the seam is much smoother and flat. I'll have to try that!!!

Hey Daphne.... yes, this is definitely one of those things where there is "more than one way to skin a cat."      I HATE expression!  Anyway, you are absolutely right... if you are trimming the fur in your seam allowences right down to the stitching line... there should really be nothing to pick from the inside at all.  I trim almost to the line, so I still have a bit to pick out from the inside.  So, I guess it's really more a matter of choice, time spent trimming vs. time spent picking.... or a combination of the two as I do.

PS.... your avatar bear is so adorable!  I LOVE black bears!
