Can anyone tell me how to tip mohair with a different colour I just want the very end of the hairs coloured.
I haven't ever done any dieing or airbrushing before so don't have the vaguest idea where to start, so again I come to TT the well of all wisdom. :pray:  :pray:  :pray:

Estelle, you can buy tipped mohair in lots of colours. For a smaller piece you could try coloring the tips with a copic marker or something similar. Perhaps Shelli's method with oil paints would work too.

I agree with Sabine about buying the tipped mohair, but if you can't get it or need a special color you can tip it but you have to be very careful and take it slow.  I would use the Earth Pallett Dyes from Australia since they are so thick and stay where you put them.  You let them dry then rinse and the color does not bleed.  I was told that Donna Butts used silk dye to tip mohair.  Donna where are you?  I would see if I could get the tipped mohair before I tried tipping it myself.

I too,  highly recommed BUYING TIPPED MOHAIR as opposed to doing it yourself if you can find the color you want. Between Edinburgh and Intercal there are tons of color combinations to choose from!!!

Estelle, You did not mention what you are trying to achieve.  If you want an all over tipped mohair, then I would definitely buy it already tipped.  But, if you want only an area tipped , I would practice with various methods.  Dry brushing would work using very small amounts of paint or dye or ink.  Airbrushing too...but you had mentioned you have never tried airbrushing so this would not be a good place to start.  You could even try using your fingers dipped, then wiped, then pinch and wiggle the paint into the tips of the mohair.  Be creative, play play play...this is a great way to discover somthing new.

It is just small areas like the top of his head and maybe his tummy I'm not sure my bears just develop as they grow

If it is just small areas, I would try the copic markers.  You would have good control of where you wanted the color and if you didn't like it you could wash it out.
