Yep here I am asking another annoying question.... But I was looking at possibly working with mohair for different animals, and I need especially long hair for some of them, like long haired dog breeds, or the mane and tail on horses/ponies.
Are there mohairs made that have a much longer pile? Say something like 3 - 4 inches, or longer?? I realize I'll have to pay an arm and a leg for something so specialized, but I'd really like to know if any even exists. please oh please let there be some somewhere!!!!
Hi Debbie,
The mohair I use for my yorkies and mane and tails for my unicorn or donkey is 3" long. The retail price is around $300 a yard. I tried using 1.5 inch on one of the yorkies and it didn't work as well. There is also the pelt of the angora goat you can use. Those you can find in 12-18 inch lengths. I am thinking that the next unicorn or donkey, I may consider needle felting the mane and tail.

Yes, That 3" stuff is to die for. The pelt of the angora goat , is that called Tibetian goat ? I found some doll sites will carry that, its wavy. I dont know if you can straighten it out if you wanted to. It is used for Santa hair/beard too.
Donna....needle felting long mohair is what some other artists do too...it a great solution. Ill bet you could felt in wool or most any kind of hair ?
Here we go,.experimenting again !!!
I sure wish Intercal would carry the 3" mohair I just know they would be more affordable......Winney
Hmmm.....if its supposed to be like human hair, I wonder if you could use one of those hair straighteners??
Right...I'm off to go check out some doll making sites to see if there's anything I can use... Thanks for the tips
