Hey,

okay, so I'm looking to create my own rabbit pattern.

I have some great ideas for the feet and body, but every head I come up with looks like a bear. Am I missing something?

Do you guys shorten the muzzle or have some other trick to make a bunny?

I hate to pry into any secrets, but I'm dying here!   bear_wub

cloverface72-copy.jpgI actually did a bit of a research kind of a thing before I made my first rabbit...and  came up with the fact that a real rabbit doesn't have a real bridge to his nose which is why when people just put long ears on bears they still look like bears...with long ears....

Rabbits have noses that aren't as defined as say a dogs nose...they kind of blend....

There are so many differences to take into account...here's my rabbit anyway...

Hi Heather

well here's my opinion - bin it if you think it's rubbish..........  bear_tongue

When drawing up the pattern make the center gusset come to a slightly rounded 'V' shape rather than having a 'muzzle shape' at the end and make the head sides to match. You'll need to slightly elongate the sides too rather than having a 'high forehead' as for a bear.

Any help?

Sorry but i'm not much good at getting my ideas across verbally - if i could be arsed i'd draw you a piccy but i can't! ha ha ha

Sorry  bear_innocent

Rabbit-silhouette.jpgSometimes when I'm making a "new" critter I take images and reduce them to silhouettes so I can more clearly make out proportions and sizing without being distracted by details.  You can do this manually by printing out an image and just coloring it in, or outlining it.  Or you can do it with a photo editor by "filling" an animal, selected and outlined, with dark color.  Last and easiest, you can find silhouettes of particular animals already made for you on the web.

In five minutes or less I found these four silhouettes of rabbits by Googling "rabbit silhouette."  Maybe they'll get you thinking in a more realistic direction when it comes to proportions for bunnies.

Have fun!

I have to say that I just add big feet and long ears to my bear head pattern  bear_whistle   because I like them that way :)

Jenny and Laura what beautiful Bunnies!!! Shelli, you never cease to amaze me with your talents. Your drawing is wonderful. I hate to admit this but I free hand all of my patterns with the exception of our Polar bear. I just find it easier that way.

Many Hugs Louise

Rascal-1997.JPGHere's my bunny, Rascal. (May he rest in peace.)  bear_innocent

I now make my bunny noses rather small and pointy. As said, they don't have a pronounced bridge nor a very big muzzle/nose. Much more dainty features than a bear. Don't have a picture of any of my recent mohair bunnies.  bear_sad

That's a great picture Daphine!!!

My bunny is soo black, it's hard to see her features, but this one is PERFECT! I'm going to save it on my computer if you don't mind.

She was soo small too. What a cutie.

Heather, Rascal would be honored to have his picture in Canada!
He was just a baby in that picture. He got pretty big but only lived 2 years. He was such a love. I miss him!  bear_cry

Heather  You have a black lop too??  Onyx was housebroken as well -- she LOVED bananas - I only fed her a small piece though ... she would make these cute lip-smacking noises when she was eating it  bear_original

Yeah, I rescued a poor black lop that used to live free in a house, then got put in a SMALL cage for the rest of her days. She now lives happy and free in my basement and sits on my lap when we watch movies.

My bunny love banana's too. They have such a sweet tooth. Any cereal and she's al mine!!! LOL

Cool yours is house broken too. It's great eh??

Glad he would be honored!! LOL
2 years, poor thing. Hardly enough time to enjoy. I'm sure you made it a great 2 years though.

Funny eh?? All of us, love our cute fuzzy bears and our cute fuzzy animals.

There MUST be a connection.

You've gotten good advice above, I agree with what has been said!  I think if you look at the bunny from the side, their profile should be fairly evenly rounded or slanted... as has been mentioned, their noses are not pronounced.  So where a bear nose will take off at a different angle from the bear's forehead, I think a bunny keeps a smoother profile.  I adore bunnies and can't ever have them due to life-threatening allergies in the family, so I'll have to just keep making them!  Here are two profile shots of some of my bunnies so you can see what I mean about the slant of the head.

Hope this helps!
Kelly

Yes, Onyx was - she was so silly in the house.. she loved laying on the cold kitchen tiled floor - sometimes on her back... dont ask me why, I never saw that before - She passed away a few years ago... I think she was about 8 yrs old or so... they have all passed now..

Fluffy (the dutch rabbit pictured above) was probably the oldest... he was my ex-boyfriend's.... when he moved, his dad wouldnt let them take him... I think he was about 10-12 yrs

Winnie (another lop - she looked like a bear so that is why I called her Winnie after Winnie the Pooh)... she was young probably lonly lived 4 years

Blanca (another lop - he was Winnie's brother) he was HUGE! He was as big as my dog! sure, I have a small dog but he was really big!  He lived probably about 4-5 years as well...

Kelly - Those bunnies are great! I too love the gray one!

Marie - You lived in the states at some time, right? Or just visited? Where does your sister live?

Heather & Kim - Rascal was house broken too...... it was easier to train him than it is my 6 mo. old terrier who STILL doesn't get it! Rascal's favorite treat was basil..... I kept a stash in the bottom drawer of the fridge where he was allowed to help himsef.... in moderation! He was a great bun but he really lived up to his name! I lived in an old house when I had him. All the telepone lines ran from room to room along the floor tacked along the wall. aka EXPOSED to rabbit teeth! I had to rewire the whole house by the time all was said and done! But I still thought the world of him!  bear_wub

He does sound like a rascal! he he he.... Onyx just liked to steal tissues and toilet paper rolls and tear them up... not that I helped her get ahold of them though  bear_innocent

My pup, Max is only housebroken because Daisy (my almost 3 yr old female is housebroken) pretty much trained him for me  bear_thumb   He is about 8 - 9 mos now... and he is a bad egg... sure is a good dog but he likes to be sneaky and do "boy" things like tackle his sister and check her into the fridge ... she gets him back though  bear_tongue

I love having 2 dogs..... it's a lot easier in that they can entertain each other and wear each other out. I used to have to send Tucker to doggie day care so he could play with the big boys and come home tired (and filthy). Nothing I did was enough to tucker him out. Now, even though Riley is smaller he still manages to give Tuck a run for his money! Next time I'm getting wee dogs that can do one lap around the block on those tiny legs and be pooped for the rest of the day!  bear_wacko
