Posts: 1,153I am interested in trying some string mohair but I wondered what the backing is like.
Has anyone used it? I don't want that knit back like Ratinee (spelled wrong I am sure) has.

Past Time BearsNancy, check out Campbell in the "Showcase" Forum . . . he is made from string. Since string is just mohair that hasn't been processed yet, the backing is the same. It's fun to work with and can be dyed very successfully.

I've used string Nancy and it's just the same as mohair..the backing is identical...I love it...
Rufnut Teddy'sNancy, the string mohair I used was ideal to work with, I don't think you will have any problems, however I did see my mohair when I purchased it and the backing was fine, it didn't fray. Good luck

Please, Please do try using string mohair. I LOVE it, you can get some really great results with it. Just take care when brushing out the seams as the string can fluff out a bit.

Posts: 1,153Well, another 100.00 just bit the mohair trail ! I bought some string and another one they had illustrated on a Sue Ann bear...all fluffy, I thinkit was an Alpaca blend...anyway, I loved it. I really like the way Intercal has photos of bears made up in a particular fabric. That is such a big help.
I know I will enjoy the string and I bought some dyes as well.

String mohair has become one of my favourites and I have another two cut out from varying lengths. The backing is the same as any other mohair...excellent. Jennifer in my avatar is made from long string mohair...she's one of my favourites. Make sure you share your finished product!

I love string mohair. It looks great on bears and when you brush it out it becomes fluffy!
Is it true that when you hot wash string mohair it fluffs up? I heard it but never tried it....Your bear is lovely Judi!!!
I have string mohair, sitting in the cupboard, hah, you will hear lots of this, I have it sitting in the cupboard- I was going to do patchwork, quilting , teddy bears and cross stitch, when I sold my one business and down scaled and opened my other shop, then patchwork took over and I brought home all the mohair, x/stitch stock) , the backing is the same as any of the other mohairs, and I was told that it dyes very well, also that it does fluff up when washed, but never tried it. I think I have about 4 metres of it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I asked the question on the Edinburgh board a while back, and got some great advice. Really hot water, or a steamer, work like a charm. When it was almost dry, I brushed/combed the pile carefully in all directions, to further loosen the strands, then smoothed in in the direction I wanted. plus a good careful brush/comb in several directions, then in the one you favor, when it's almost dry make all the difference. It gets really fluffy and much more dense. Mine is not a bear yet, but it looks great.

I think I have a photo of a bear made with string mohair that I washed......I'll be back....
Here she is , Biscuit. She is made from the string mohair that has been washed. Like Eileen said , I also brush it while it is drying. It's very fluffy.
The bear in an earlier post, Orlando has the string mohair as is.

I foolishly sold a lot of my string mohair...I'd like to have tried this washing method...it's almost like custom mohair as you can make it how you want...and if you also dyed it it would be really neat!!

I never thought to brush it out, what a lovely effect! 
Here's one of my very first bears in string mohair (don't laugh too loud, I might hear you!!) but you will get the effect - well it might put you off!! 
Her name was Madison.

LuxembearsCalre and Louise, your photos are beautiful. I found that my string mohair had quite a stiff backing until I washed it. What a difference it made. Really fun mohair!
