Thanks everyone for the tips bear_original I've got some green (doesn't matter it's green you wont see it) plastic coated wire which i am going to insert along the length of the wing (perhaps more than 1 piece depends when the wing is finished) so will see how that goes ! i will also wrap some fabric or something around the end to stop it damaging the fabric and now i have the pattern sorted i just need the fabric to arrive and i can get started on the proper piece !! cannot wait.  bear_grin

ohh yes i still have the first bear i ever made  bear_grin  he doesn't even have a name. he is purple and yellow

Pipa

Sueann  - i've got my pattern pieces sorted, i have made a template bird out of ultrasuede and the pieces i designed work great so far. !! bear_original

Pipa

Thanks Sueann a drawing would be great  once you have the idea of how the pattern pieces go it's easy to draw one to fit the dove. i've got his side pieces done. just need to know wether 2 gussets would work best for the body bear_original , i think 2 sides and a gusset down the back and down the tummy would make it look better and plumper, i planned on adding it's tail as an extra piece same with the wings and the beak. haven't even thought about the feet yet !! but the dove wouldn't really need feet so that's not my worry,

if only i had my fabric i will be dying now for it to arrive so i can get started on creating the thing. i've got a few months to create it but it will take me that long to get it perfect,

i want to do some shading on the wings aswell so i need to cut out lots of practice wings and practice getting that right, and as it's white fabric i guess i need a subtle cream or pale grey for the shading or something

oh my.. i really have ALOT to think about bear_sad

Pipa

okies.. anyone got any pointers on designing a bird pattern? i've drawn a dove sketch on paper. marked out what pattern pieces i need etc. my wing pattern piece is all drawn and cut out. the side body part pattern piece is drawn. my question is do you think i need 4 body part pattern pieces or just 3 ??

the last bird (and only bird) i made had 3 body pieces. 2 sides and an underbody gusset..but i'm thinking i might need 2 sides a gusset down the top/back of the bird and a gusset underneath?

argh help anyone know what they are doing with birds? hehe any pointers would be greatly recieved, i've just ordered some white UV which i am going to make this bird out of but since it's not here i can't cut it out and give it a go and make the pattern up as i go along so for now i am trying to get my pattern pretty spot on as much as you can without cutting up the fabric !

i reallyyy want this dove to be mega special, so i need to get this design as perfectly looking like a dove as possible it's real improtant to me  bear_noexpression

Oh he is STUNNING!!!!!!!

Pipa

oh how funny. that reminds me of a long distance coach trip i was on one time.a middle aged lady fell asleep on my shoulder. she talked constantly. and bless her dear heart she hadn't had a thing to eat nor drink for hours because the bus had been delayed and sent off all over the uk (i found this out in between having my ear chewed off). so i kindly offered her a chocolate bar out of my stash (yes penny i even take a stash on coach trips can never be too prepared hehe) and this poor woman was EVER so grateful that i gave her some food. it made me feel like a real good samaritan  ! and no i didn't give her the chocolate just to shut her up hehehe

Penny like you, i have a neon light. many a time i have been standing in a coach que on my travels of the uk and complete strangers have asked me to watch thier suitcases while they goto the toilet, i must look very trusting !!!   bear_grin

Thanks girls for all the suggestions. i agree the cardboard probably won't last, It's my brothers 10 year death anniversary coming up in a few months time and i want to make a white dove (eek. this will be a challenge lol designing the pattern ) , so i want it's wings to be out. i will have a snoot aorund the house see what wire i have, actually  i have some gardening wire which is coated in plastic i'm pretty positive that would be strong enough to hold the wing (it wont be very big or heavy and a few strands of it like dilu said in each section of the wing would make it strong enough i'm sure..

oooo i knew you girls would have some advice  bear_original

Hello everyone, I was wondering..

i am planning on making a bird out of either mohair, synthetic or UV,ultrasuede or whichever i have in my stash that will be suitable.. now, i want to make the bird so it's wings can be open or bent into shape. so they need to be wired. the thing is. i've never wired anything before so what kind of wire do you use? would a pipe cleaner be good enough ?? it will only be a small bird. approx 4 inches, and it won't be jointed

so do you think a pipe cleaner hidden inside the wing along the length of it would suffice? and if not. what do you suggest?? It won't be going anywhere i will be keeping it so it's not like it needs to be mega sturdy or anything as i won't be playing with it. i just want it's wings out as if it were in flight so it needs something stiff to keep the wings out.. hey what about a hard piece of carbdorad? think that would be good enough ?? or would that be too weak ?? Hmmm..

helpppppp !!
